| Essential Job Duties |
The Surgical & Sterile Services Manager is a mission-critical leadership role responsible for the operational success of our surgical theaters across the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center and the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center.
This role requires a sophisticated balance of administrative oversight, clinical expertise, and educational leadership. You will lead a multidisciplinary team of Technicians and Sterile Processing specialists, ensuring the highest standards of care for both elective and complex, non-elective procedures across a vast range of species.
Core Responsibilities:
Operations & Personnel Leadership
- Strategic Oversight: Manage daily workflow, case assignments, and room readiness. You serve as the primary liaison between specialty services and anesthesia providers to ensure seamless patient transitions.
- Talent Management: Oversee the full lifecycle of staff employment, including recruitment, performance evaluations, and professional development.
- Logistics: Coordinate complex 24/7 staffing models, managing on-call rotations, PTO, and student schedules to ensure uninterrupted operational readiness.
Clinical Education & Technical Support
- Instructional Leadership: Direct the training of new employees and DVM students in sterile technique, equipment operation, and SOPs.
- Surgical Support: Provide technical guidance during complex interventions in specialties such as Neurology, Soft Tissue, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, and Cardiology.
- Advanced Knowledge: Maintain a high level of proficiency in drug calculations, intra-op medication administration, and multi-species surgical protocols.
Compliance, Safety & Asset Management
- Safety Authority: Serve as the Primary Laser Safety Officer for three medical hospitals, maintaining all safety certifications and leading biannual training.
- Sterile Integrity: Partner with the Infectious Disease Committee to manage nosocomial culture programs and hospital-wide sterilization policies.
- Capital Assets: Oversee the maintenance and vendor relationships for high-value surgical instrumentation, including portable C-ARMs, autoclaves, and cautery systems.

Environmental & Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in an environment involving sick animals, hazardous materials, and gas anesthetics.
- Capability to lift up to 50 pounds and remain on-site beyond scheduled hours when surgical cases require extended support.

Qualifications
| Minimum Experience/Education |
Bachelor's degree and two years of general research experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

- Personnel Leadership: Experience supervising varied teams and managing professional development in a veterinary clinic or high-volume setting.
- Clinical Technical Proficiency: Strong foundational knowledge of surgical environments, sterile techniques, and various medical specialties.
- Educational Aptitude: A demonstrated ability to train, coach, or mentor individuals with varying levels of experience.
- Operational Management: Proven success in handling complex logistics, including staff scheduling and resource coordination.
- Regulatory & Safety Oversight: Familiarity with maintaining hospital safety standards, equipment compliance, and quality control protocols.
