Senior Business Systems Analyst, IT Data Engineering

IDEXX Laboratories, Inc
401(k)
United States, Maine, Westbrook

Oct 08, 2026

We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated Business Systems Analyst Sr II to support the Results Data Exchange (RDE) platform. RDE is a cloud-based data platform that ingests, standardizes, and distributes diagnostic results from IDEXX's global reference laboratory network. It receives results from multiple Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and delivers trusted data to customer-facing applications such as VetConnect PLUS, enterprise analytics in Snowflake, and other downstream consumers.

This role is the business and data authority for RDE. You will lead requirements discovery with laboratory, LIMS, and downstream partner teams, own the data agreements and source-to-target mappings that guide engineering, and turn complex veterinary diagnostic workflows into clear, testable requirements. You will bring deep knowledge of reference lab operations and LIMS data domains, along with technical fluency to work directly with engineers on a modern AWS data platform.

This position works closely with the RDE Product Manager, RDE Technical Lead and engineering team. It also partners with LIMS product and development teams, reference laboratory operations, quality, customer-facing software teams such as VetConnect PLUS, data governance, InfoSec, and enterprise analytics stakeholders.

In this role, you will be responsible for....

Requirements and Analysis

  • Lead requirements discovery with business stakeholders, lab SMEs, LIMS teams, and downstream consumers, breaking initiatives into work detailed enough for engineering to estimate and build.
  • Translate business needs into technical requirements, business rules, use cases, process and data flow diagrams, and acceptance criteria.
  • Perform current and future state process mapping and gap analysis across lab order, result, and reporting workflows.
  • Advise stakeholders on feasibility, tradeoffs, and options, and align the project team on a course of action.
  • Independently investigate data issues using SQL and platform tools, identifying root cause across source systems, RDE pipelines, and downstream outputs.

Documentation and Data Governance

  • Own Data Relationship Agreements between RDE and partner systems, defining business objectives, high-level flows, key validations, SLAs, and disaster recovery expectations.
  • Author BRDs and FRDs for new initiatives and integration changes, and secure stakeholder sign-off.
  • Own Source-to-Target mappings documenting data lineage and transformation logic from LIMS inputs to RDE outputs.
  • Partner with the Technical Lead on data contracts (schemas, required and optional fields, valid values, PII flags, file and API specs) for every inbound and outbound feed.
  • Define and maintain data quality rules, thresholds, and freshness and completeness SLAs, and work with the data steward to keep business definitions current in the enterprise data catalog.

Agile Delivery

  • Write and refine epics and stories with clear acceptance criteria, and maintain a prioritized backlog with the Product Manager.
  • Lead backlog refinement, participate in all scrum ceremonies, and serve as the go-to expert on agile requirements.
  • Work with engineering and QE on test planning, golden-file and data parity validation, UAT, and production readiness.
  • Support production incident analysis, impact assessment, and stakeholder communication when data issues affect labs or customers.
  • Leadership and Relationships
  • Build strong relationships with lab, LIMS, and downstream partner teams, and act as liaison between the business, IT infrastructure, and engineering.
  • Lead and influence without authority, and drive ambiguous problems to resolution.
  • Mentor other business systems analysts and raise the team's documentation and requirements standards.
  • Improve processes for efficiency, scalability, and adoption of AI-assisted delivery practices.

What you will need to succeed...

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7+ years as a business systems analyst, business analyst, or similar role, preferably in a technology-driven or data platform environment.
  • Hands-on experience gathering requirements for integrating with or supporting LIMS in a veterinary or human clinical reference laboratory. Veterinary diagnostics experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the lab order-to-result lifecycle: accessioning, test and panel ordering, specimen handling, result entry and verification, corrections and amended results, add-on tests, and result release.
  • Understanding of lab data domains: test and assay catalogs, panels and profiles, reference ranges and units, result flags, pathology and microbiology results, specimen and patient (animal) attributes, and client and practice identifiers.
  • Familiarity with how reference lab results reach veterinary practices through practice management systems and results portals.
  • Experience with HL7, XML, JSON, and pipe-delimited flat file formats.
  • Experience in multi-LIMS or multi-region environments, including migrations or consolidations where data parity and backward compatibility matter.
  • Expert knowledge of agile methods and writing stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Strong SQL skills and working knowledge of databases and reporting tools.
  • Experience writing data mappings, lineage documentation, and interface specifications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including explaining complex technical topics to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to draw sound conclusions from limited or ambiguous information.
  • Strong planning and prioritization skills, with the ability to adapt to changing needs.
  • Ability to work independently with sound judgment and collaboratively within teams.

Preferred

  • Experience with AWS-based data platforms and the technologies listed under RDE Technical Environment.
  • Experience with Snowflake data models and analytics consumers.
  • Experience with data governance practices, including data contracts, quality frameworks, and data catalogs.
  • Knowledge of HL7 or other healthcare and laboratory interoperability standards.
  • Experience supporting platform modernization, migration, or re-architecture.
  • Experience using AI tools to speed up requirements analysis and documentation.
