Job Summary

The Systems Administrator II position reports to the Director of IT Operations and the Systems Administrator Supervisor and supports SVM-IT's Windows-based infrastructure, endpoint management platforms, Active Directory services, and cloud integrated systems.

The role involves administering endpoint management tools, managing Active Directory and Group Policy, supporting Windows server environments, and assisting with system deployments, automation, and security controls in accordance with established policies and best practices.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • No minimum education required.
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in enterprise Windows systems administration, including Active Directory, endpoint management, and Windows Server environments.
  • Experience providing technical support for clinical, laboratory, or vendormanaged computing systems, including coordinating with vendors, ensuring system connectivity, meeting security and compliance requirements, and troubleshooting specialized medical or laboratory equipment in a healthcare or research environment.
  • Advanced experience in system automation and scripting skills using tools like PowerShell, Python, or Bash to streamline administrative tasks and improve operational efficiency.
  • Working experience administering Microsoft Intune, including device enrollment, configuration profiles, compliance and security policies, application deployment, endpoint reporting, Windows Autopilot support, and troubleshooting managed endpoints in hybrid and cloud-based environments.
  • Working experience administering Microsoft Configuration Manager (MECM/SCCM), including creating and maintaining application and software packages, managing collections and deployments, building and supporting task sequences, performing Operating System Deployment (OSD) and image-based deployments, creating and managing provisioning packages, and troubleshooting client and deployment issues.
  • Applies advanced systems concepts in managing Active Directory services, including troubleshooting AD forests, domains, and trusts, user and group administration, Group Policy management, DFS file share services, DNS/DHCP configuration, PKI infrastructure, and experience with domain migration and consolidation.
  • Applies advanced systems concepts in administering and optimizing complex Windows Server environments, including experience with Windows Server 2016/2019/2022.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of security principles and practices, with experience in securing Windows servers, Active Directory, and cloud-based environments against emerging threats.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with relevant Microsoft certifications in Windows Server, endpoint management, and Azure administration are highly preferred, including credentials such as Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate, Microsoft 365 Endpoint Administrator Associate, Azure Administrator Associate, or similar Microsoft server and endpoint certifications.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area of Information Technology or equivalent years of experience and/or training in Information Technology.
  • Experience working in a hospital environment and/or a higher education environment and demonstrated ability to work individually and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated experience with disaster recovery strategies for Windows-based systems, Active Directory, and cloud infrastructure to ensure business continuity and data integrity using tools such as Veeam, MS Data Protection Manager, CA Arcserve and etc.
  • Knowledge with applying the following security frameworks: NIST, PCI, HIPAA, GDPR and IS3/UC Davis CyberSafety (If current or previously employed with UC Davis) General knowledge and experience in conducting security risk assessments and developing risk mitigation strategies to proactively identify and address potential security vulnerabilities and threats.
  • Organizational skills and experience using project management principles to define goals, organize and schedule complex technology projects, coordinate project execution, and manage teams as well as, experience using Change Management processes and workflows.
  • Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to interact with a diverse group of people to include clinicians, students and staff.
  • Ability to implicitly give and receive directions, information, and knowledge to and from other team members, users, co-workers, managers and vendors.
  • Candidates with industry-recognized certifications such as CompTIA Security+, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), and etc are highly preferred.

This position is part of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Information Technology (SVM-IT) department. SVM-IT is a matrix organization consisting of the three main functions of IT Operations, Application Development and Project Management. SVM-IT provides services to the faculty, students, staff and affiliates of both the School of Veterinary Medicine, the California Animal Health and Food Safety Lab System (CAHFS), and the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH).

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
