Senior Cloud Engineer | Remote | 4-month contract
Vervint is hiring a Senior Cloud Engineer to own OTA and firmware management for our backend platform team. This is a hands-on, contract engineering role: you'll own the cloud side of firmware publishing, device eligibility, and rollout delivery end to end - how firmware is published, which devices are eligible, how rollouts progress, and how we confirm an update actually landed - working in Go and AWS and making the architectural calls yourself.
What You'll Do:
- Work alongside architects to implement the firmware release model - hardware families, immutable bundles, channels, and per-device assignment - and the resolution rules that decide what a given device should be running.
- Run progressive rollouts safely: staged percentages, version pins and floors, pause and rollback, and eligibility rules that keep the wrong firmware off the wrong hardware.
- Own artifact publishing and delivery - checksummed packages in S3, expiring download URLs, and delivery that holds up on constrained devices and poor home networks.
- Build the reporting side so a rollout is observable while it's happening: update status from devices, success and failure rates, and the devices that are quietly stuck.
- Design the APIs and admin tooling that firmware, QA, and support teams use to publish builds, target test fleets, and unblock an individual device.
- Partner with firmware and manufacturing on version schemes, install policies, and what devices are expected to be running when they leave the factory.
- Treat safety as a design constraint: authorization on destructive operations, audit trails, and guardrails that make a catastrophic rollout hard to trigger by accident.
- Define your infrastructure as code across environments, and keep OTA alarmed, observable, and covered by the runbooks an on-call engineer needs at two in the morning.
What You'll Bring:
- 6+ years building production backend services in the cloud, with strong hands-on Go - or deep experience in another statically typed language and real appetite for writing Go.
- Deep AWS experience across serverless and container services - Lambda, ECS and Fargate, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3 - and the judgment to choose between them.
- Direct experience with OTA, firmware distribution, or fleet update systems - or another high-stakes rollout system where a mistake reaches users you cannot easily reach back.
- Strong data modeling instincts, including DynamoDB design for versioned, immutable, and precedence-based data.
- Real understanding of device constraints: intermittent connectivity, limited storage, resumable downloads, and partial failure.
- Versioning discipline - semantic versioning, compatibility rules, and rollback thinking done before the rollout rather than during it.
- Infrastructure as code, CDK preferred, plus IAM, KMS, artifact integrity, and least-privilege access as part of your normal work.
- A track record on contract engagements: you ramp up fast, work inside existing conventions, and scope your own work - plus a passion for connected consumer products and the curiosity to thrive alongside a strong engineering team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Connected device or IoT backends: MQTT and IoT Core, device state, provisioning, and manufacturing flows.
- Firmware signing, secure boot, or artifact and supply-chain integrity practices.
- AWS IoT Jobs, IoT Device Management, or comparable fleet orchestration tooling.
- Consumer hardware at scale - large fleets, multiple regions, and long product lifetimes with old firmware still in the field.
- Observability and on-call practice (Prometheus, Loki, OpenTelemetry, alarms, runbooks), and using AI-assisted development tools where their output can be verified.
