Ball State University is inviting applications for the position of Administration Building Security Officer to champion the safety, security, and operational integrity of our campus community. This non-sworn, non-law enforcement position is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and highly service-oriented environment within the facility. The ideal candidate will excel at building positive relationships across campus, delivering top-tier customer service, and supporting a safe, high-integrity environment for our students, faculty, and staff.

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the United States without employer sponsorship.

What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function:

The Administration Building Security Officer is responsible for supporting a safe, secure, and service-oriented environment within the facility. This position performs routine security functions including monitoring building access, conducting patrols of the building, observing and reporting safety concerns, assisting visitors, and responding to non-emergency incidents.

This is a non-sworn, non-law enforcement position and does not include arrest authority. The Security Officer is expected to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and visitors while supporting the university's commitment to safety, customer service, and operational excellence.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Security Operations

1. Monitor and patrol the Administration Building and surrounding areas to ensure the safety and security of university property and occupants.

2. Conduct routine interior and exterior patrols on foot as assigned.

3. Unlock and secure facilities according to established schedules and procedures.

4. Monitor entrances and exits to prevent unauthorized access.

5. Observe and report suspicious activity, security concerns, safety hazards, and policy violations.

Access Control & Monitoring

6. Verify identification and credentials of employees, visitors, contractors, and vendors to the Office of the President.

7. Monitor Administration Building security cameras.

8. Respond appropriately to building alarms and access issues.

9. Adhere to key control and access card procedures in accordance with university policy.

Customer Service & Assistance

10. Provide information, directions, and assistance to students, employees, and visitors.

11. Serve as a visible and approachable presence within the Administration Building.

12. Promote a welcoming and professional campus environment.

13. Respond courteously and effectively to routine requests and concerns.

Incident Response & Reporting

14. Respond to non-emergency and certain emergency incidents and provide appropriate assistance.

15. Contact campus police when necessary.

16. Prepare accurate, timely, and detailed incident and activity reports.

17. Document security concerns, accidents, injuries, and unusual occurrences.

Emergency Preparedness

18. Assist with emergency response procedures including evacuations, shelter-in-place operations, and building lockdowns.

19. Support university emergency management efforts during incidents or severe weather events.

20. Participate in required safety and emergency preparedness training.

Collaboration

21. Work collaboratively with campus police, emergency management, facilities personnel, administrators, and other university departments.

22. Assist with security support for meetings, special events, and after-hours operations as assigned.

23. Perform other related duties as assigned.

24. Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 18 months of education beyond high school or equivalent.

  • One (1) year of experience in security, safety, customer service, facilities operations, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain professionalism in a variety of situations.

  • Basic computer and technology skills.

  • Ability to successfully pass a job-related agility test.

  • Strong observational and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations appropriately.

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

  • Ability to remain calm and effective during stressful or emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in higher education, healthcare, government, or institutional security settings.

  • Experience using video security systems, access control systems, or incident reporting software.

  • Training in de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, or emergency response.
