  • Re 20% Travel: Area includes all of Client's territory (almost to Oregon, down to Santa Barbara, and almost to Tahoe).

Position Summary

We are seeking a Senior Substation Project Engineer to lead the engineering and design of complex electric substation projects. This senior-level position requires mastery of project engineering responsibilities and the ability to apply extensive engineering knowledge, principles, and practices to resolve complex problems with limited direction.

The engineer will provide technical leadership, coaching, mentoring, and direction to engineering teams while supporting project execution, design, contract specifications, and technical evaluations. The role also involves presenting technical information, leading team meetings, interpreting industry practices and codes, and collaborating with internal teams, contractors, vendors, and public agencies.


Key Responsibilities

  • Manage large, complex electric engineering projects from planning through execution.
  • Perform engineering analyses, studies, and develop conceptual designs for substation projects.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching, and direction to engineers and technical teams.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineering team members and facilitate knowledge transfer.
  • Assist with developing and finalizing contract project specifications.
  • Evaluate technical aspects of contractor bids and proposals.
  • Collaborate with land, permitting, legal, and other internal departments to support project delivery.
  • Resolve complex engineering and project issues using creative and non-standard approaches when appropriate.
  • Independently plan and execute work to meet established project objectives.
  • Lead technical meetings and deliver engineering presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Interpret and apply applicable engineering standards, industry practices, and codes.
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, local public agencies, project teams, and management.
  • Provide technical direction and support across multiple project teams.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited U.S. program or equivalent international degree.
  • 8+ years of cumulative experience in electrical engineering and design.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing multiple large-scale, high-budget electric substation projects.
  • Strong experience in substation engineering and design.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Current California Professional Engineer (PE) license.


Work Arrangement & Travel

  • Hybrid position requiring 2 days per week in the office.
  • Assigned office location will be West Sacramento, Fresno, or Oakland.
  • Approximately 20% travel throughout the service territory, which may extend from areas near Oregon to Santa Barbara and toward the Tahoe region.
  • Candidates should be prepared for field/project travel as required.
