Dr. Travis Wheeler's lab at the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy invites applicants to apply for the position of Scientific Analyst II. Make an impact in genomic research while developing specialized skills in bioinformatics and data analysis. The selected candidate will support efforts to identify, classify, and curate repetitive genomic sequences across diverse genomes. The role involves the use of specialized bioinformatics software along with manual validation of results. Contribute to meaningful research in a collaborative environment dedicated to scientific innovation.

This is a part-time position that will be done remote in California.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform genome-scale identification and classification of transposable element (TE) families across target eukaryotic genomes.
  • Apply knowledge of TE biology and classification systems to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Manually validate computational results, resolve ambiguous classifications, and integrate findings with established TE ontologies (e.g., Repbase, Dfam) and community libraries.
  • Interact with internal and external collaborators on TE annotation and genomics projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skilled in analyzing and classifying transposable elements.
