Departmental Overview

The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus affiliated community members. In addition to the 30 sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of recreational activities and state of the art equipment.

Position Summary

The Competitive and Esports Coordinator involves instructional or program activities related to recreation, leisure, and fitness in an accredited environment; provides first aid and emergency care as necessary, and responds to user/customer needs. The Competitive and Esports Coordinator provides administrative support and supervision to student employees and competitive teams.

Responsibilities

  • Selects, trains and supervises staff.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and provides performance management to around 5 student leads and 5-10 student assistants.
  • Supervises additional 3-5 student officers for competitive esports teams.
  • Supervises employee performance, career development and adherence to job standards.
  • Plans, organizes and implements esports programs.
  • Oversees daily operations of esports center and esports events/rentals.
  • Supervises competitive esports teams, specifically the team captains/managers.
  • Coordinate with team members on compliance of UC Berkeley standards, scheduling tournaments, and verifying training completions.
  • Coordinates small and large scale tournaments both physically in the center, and virtually.
  • Implements program policies and procedures.
  • Signs teams up for tournaments and coordinates with team representatives on travel and logistics.
  • Assists with appropriate public relations and promotional programs.
  • Partners with the Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships to increase corporate sponsorships to support RecWell and the Esports program.
  • Submits requests for use of recreational facilities.
  • Partners with campus partners to ensure facility maintenance occurs when needed in Foothill.
  • Works with youth programs to coordinate summer programs including Esports and Media Production camp in the summer.
  • Monitors budget and makes budget recommendations to manager for assigned activities / programs.
  • Maintains files, records and prepares reports as necessary.
  • Oversees inventory, storage, budget and maintenance of sports and recreational equipment.
  • Reports safety issues to appropriate personnel and recommends improvements.
  • Maintain low risk by providing adequate training to student employees about their digital footprint when engaging in esports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Competitive Esports Ecosystems and Game Titles and operations of competitive esports, governing bodies, and collegiate esports organizations - including understanding game-specific rulesets, platform requirements, and the cultural landscape of gaming communities.
  • Knowledge and skill in planning, organizing, and executing esports events and tournaments including scheduling, streaming setup, venue or virtual platform coordination, and vendor communication.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Uses creative problem solving to deliver strong service orientation, program management, and sound judgment and decision-making; uses critical thinking skills to develop original ideas in a varied and challenging environment.
  • Client service minded focus, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills in the English language.
  • Proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.
  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn campus policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to work effectively, across all organization levels, internally and externally.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with PC bang facility infrastructure and traditional internet cafe business models, including an understanding of commercial revenue drivers and space utilization challenges.
  • A foundational understanding of user research methodologies, quality assurance (QA) testing protocols, and playtesting procedures within the game development pipeline.

Education / Training

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Required)

Licenses / Certifications

  • Red Cross CPR (Preferred)
  • Standard First Aid Training Certification (Preferred)

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $66,000.00 - $72,000.00.

  • This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Career position eligible for UC benefits.

Other Information
