| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The
UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures is committed to research and teaching at all levels in German, Russian and several other Germanic, Central European, and Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. One of the most vibrant departments of its kind in the nation,
GSLL is closely linked with interdisciplinary centers including the
UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies, and with the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies. We are also home to the Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies, one of the country's leading graduate programs in German. |
| Position Summary |
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking to hire a new position to hire a Teaching Assistant Professor in German. The successful applicant will be expected to teach a minimum 3/2 course load and contribute to departmental service activities. | Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
A conferred Ph.D. in Germanic Languages and Literatures, or a related field, is required by July 1, 2026. Native or near-native competence in English and German is required. |
| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Candidates are expected to present evidence of both experience and excellence in teaching German language, and contemporary German literature and culture at a college or university, including an expertise on textbooks and teaching methodology for elementary and intermediate German language courses. |

https://unc.peopleadmin.com/postings/320893 , and upload 1) a letter of application; 2) a current CV; 3) a statement of teaching philosophy; 4) two syllabi, one for elementary or intermediate German language, and another for a content course of their choice.
Additional materials may be requested at a later date. At the time of application candidates will be required to identify the names, titles, and email addresses of three professional references, at least one of whom must be prepared to discuss teaching in detail. These recommenders must be at the Teaching Assistant Professor, or Assistant Professor, level or higher. Recommenders identified by the applicant will be contacted via email with instructions for uploading their letters of support.
