Position Overview

The following is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. This list of duties is illustrative only, and is not a comprehensive listing of all the functions and responsibilities performed.

Position Summary:
The Computer Technician II is responsible for, but not limited to, the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and support of campus computer systems and associated hardware and software; pulling and terminating wiring for voice, data, and video; documenting workloads and procedures; and providing prompt, courteous technical support to the campus community. This position reports to the IT Supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Installs, tests, repairs, upgrades, implements, and documents new and existing hardware and software at an advanced level.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and relocates network and telecommunications equipment.
  • Documents workloads and activities.
  • Writes status reports and technical documentation.
  • Assists users with the operation of equipment.
  • Assists with user training.
  • Maintains and enforces effective security measures.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of computer-related technologies.
  • Adheres to industry standards and ensures quality assurance in all assigned projects.
  • Maintains a safe working environment.
  • Provides support to various user offices to ensure data integrity and proper system use.
  • Troubleshoots reported hardware issues.
  • Recommends appropriate equipment and supplies.
  • Performs preventive maintenance.
  • Assists the Technician III and other IT staff as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic math at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Ability to read and understand moderately complex plans, drawings, schematics, operation and repair manuals, and cable layout sheets.
  • Basic knowledge of computer hardware and software.

Working Conditions

  • This position requires a combination of office-and field-based work across campus environments.
  • Duties involve frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching while installing, repairing, and maintaining computer and telecommunications equipment.
  • The employee must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing approximately 25-50 pounds.
  • Work may require climbing ladders, working under desks, and accessing confined or hard-to-reach spaces.
  • The role involves extended periods of computer use, including viewing monitors and using standard input devices.
  • The employee may be exposed to low-voltage electrical components, dust, and varying temperatures when working in server rooms, wiring closets, or other mechanical spaces.
  • Adherence to safety protocols and the proper use of tools and equipment are required.
