Role:

Under general supervision, but following established policies and procedures, performs a variety of duties as delegated by the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Consumer Underwriting. Assists the AVP of Consumer Lending with organizing, planning and directing the Credit Union's Consumer Lending Direct and Indirect Underwriting functions, Indirect Loan Processing and managing the Loan Operating Systems. Directs the activities of Underwriting, Indirect lending and Loan Operating System Staff. Is accountable for the ongoing review of the Credit Union's Consumer Lending (Direct and Indirect delivery channels) underwriting and closing goals, objectives, statistics and procedures. Creates and sustains a clear vision for the Underwriting, Indirect Lending, Quality Assurance and Loan Operating System departments to ensure alignment with the credit union's service and growth objectives.

Consistently demonstrates the ability to think independently, outside the box, by effectively responding to each individual member's unique situation. Commands a thorough knowledge of the lending process from application to closing to ensure maximum funding rates. Demonstrates an unsurpassed commitment to exceptional member service and teamwork. Is fully knowledgeable of all AFCU lending products and services. Is able to clearly and effectively communicate with members and all levels of staff in oral and written form and is proficient with applicable technology. Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
  • In conjunction with the AVP of Consumer Lending and other departments, develops, recommends, and-once approved-implements departmental policies, procedures, products, and services. Researches, evaluates, and recommends underwriting guidelines, pricing (interest rates), fees, and other charges that align with Credit Union strategy, remain competitive in the marketplace, and support profitability and safe-and-sound lending
  • Manages dealer and vendor partners to ensure Credit Union objectives, service levels, and compliance requirements are met. Acts as a liaison to vendors (e.g., lending system, third-party integrations, refinance partners, credit bureaus) and provides project coordination with impacted internal departments. Identifies and communicates enhancement opportunities generated through business process reviews. Maintains current knowledge of applicable association, network, and program rules and regulations
  • Resolves complex member issues using sound judgment and lending expertise; explains policies and decisions clearly while maintaining positive member relationships. Serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for consumer lending underwriting, indirect lending, and lending systems. Provides consultative support to internal partners by answering questions and clarifying underwriting decisions and requirements
  • Develops, monitors, and reports consumer lending underwriting, funding, and quality assurance trends, including underwriting queue health. Defines, tracks, and reports on goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) and ensures metrics are updated at least monthly. Analyzes performance results, identifies root causes, and recommends process, staffing, or policy changes. Provides oversight and participates in department and enterprise projects as assigned
  • Oversees indirect loan underwriting and funding and ensures sound, consistent loan processing practices. Develops, monitors, and reports on indirect loan closing and quality assurance trends
  • Ensures safe-and-sound underwriting practices across all consumer lending channels. Provides underwriting guidance and escalation support to the team as needed to maintain consistency, quality, and member experience. Ensures professional internal service by partnering with other departments to answer questions and provide underwriting-related information
  • Ensures safe-and-sound consumer lending through loan quality assurance audits, monitoring, and reporting. Identifies exceptions and emerging risks, recommends corrective actions, and partners with stakeholders to resolve issues and improve controls and member experience
  • Analyzes workflow and decisioning processes within the loan origination system (LOS). Validates and monitors program performance post-implementation to identify operational issues, ensure controls operate as intended, and drive timely resolutions
  • Supports the development, deployment, and ongoing maintenance of the LOS for consumer lending underwriting and funding. Coordinates and documents testing for new releases, upgrades, integrations, and system changes; validates results with business stakeholders and ensures appropriate change readiness
  • Produces and maintains performance reporting (e.g., dealer scorecards, loan growth, funding rates, cycle times, and other assigned reports). Evaluates the effectiveness of plans, programs, and initiatives; partners with business stakeholders to recommend and implement improvements

Knowledge and Skills

  • Minimum of seven years of financial institution experience, including experience developing and executing strategies to grow consumer loans and/or business portfolios while managing credit risk.
  • Minimum of five years of people-management experience required, including coaching, performance management, and workforce planning
  • Bachelor's degree required, or high school diploma with 15+ years of progressively responsible experience in consumer lending/underwriting
  • Strong problem-resolution, change leadership, and process-improvement skills, with the ability to influence across functions and drive adoption of new standards and controls
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills; able to prioritize in a high-volume, time-sensitive environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present data-driven recommendations to leadership
  • Demonstrated knowledge of consumer lending policies, underwriting practices, and regulatory requirements (e.g., ECOA, FCRA, TILA/Reg Z, BSA/AML, and related guidance). Proficient with PCs and business tools, including Microsoft Office; able to learn and leverage lending systems, reporting, and workflow tools to improve outcomes.
  • The ability to lift 25 lbs. and utilize standard office equipment including, but not limited to, PC, fax, copier, telephone, etc
  • Ability to function in a financial institution environment
