Job Summary

SUMMARY

The Medication Access Coordinator (MAC) is a collaborative agent who helps gain access to medications or devices needed to ensure positive healthcare outcomes. The MAC creates, implements and monitors plans for medication/device access and ensure full utilization of all manufacturers, foundations and programs that assists in positive health outcomes for all patients and maximizes GHS savings and revenue. The MAC compiles, prepare and communicates all activities to appropriate team members, with documentation in the medical record, monthly reports, and invoice tracking. The MAC must be proficient in the electronic medical record, pharmacy information system, shipment tracking, financial systems, and manufacturer portals.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct patient insurance, benefits and financial investigation and verification by directly communicating with patients.

  • Complete prior authorization forms, negotiate authorization status with insurers and track status of prescription approval.

  • Facilitate enrollment of patients in patient assistance programs and collaborate with social services and case management on patient assistance.

  • Assist in the preparation of medical necessity and appeal letters.

  • Facilitate prescription filling and aid in patient adherence to medication therapy.

  • Conduct research of financial information, in electronic health record, and external systems to identify qualifying patients for medication/device access.

  • Schedule and manage appointments to include clinical pharmacists and/or providers.

  • Submit prescription claims to pharmacy benefit managers to assess medication coverage, need for prior authorization, copay assistance, etc. and document in the electronic medical record and/or pharmacy information system (flowsheets, smart forms, FYI and progress notes).

  • Facilitate communication between providers and patients, i.e., medication pick up, medication refill reminders, PA/PAP status, lab orders, appointment scheduling, reminders, pharmacoeconomic issues, etc.

  • Maintain current knowledge of manufacturer indigent patient program criteria, and communicates changes and developments.

  • Maintains records and statistics for the purpose of evaluation, cost study and program analysis.

  • Identify payor sources for medications/medical devices (insurance coverage, manufacturer patient assistance programs, state and federal programs, foundations, etc.).

  • Complete face to face or telephone interviews with patients to assess medication access.

  • Coordinate assembly of documents to audit based on area of expertise. Coordinate patient foundations for copay assistance (for insured patients).

  • Assist patients in completing any and all relevant applications and applying for Low Income Subsidy through Social Security Administration.

  • Manage invoice process for medication or medical devices obtained through PAP.

  • Complete patient eligibility analysis and determine action needed for patient access. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required: High School Diploma or GED is required

  • Preferred:Associate's Degree or completion of a pharmacy technician program or CPhT

  • Required:

    Three (3) years of experience as a retail pharmacy technician, medication access coordinator, or equivalent position.

  • Preferred:Five (5) years of experience as a retail pharmacy technician, medication access coordinator, or equivalent position.

  • Experience with Epic (electronic medical record); writing progress notes, and completing prior authorization requests via phone and portal.

  • Required: Skilled in the use of computers; Microsoft Office with proficiency in Excel and Access.

  • Strong organizational skills, problem-solving, report analysis, and basic understanding of medical terminology.

  • Must possess strong organizational skills and the ability to generate and thoroughly analyze reports.

  • Must understand medical terminology.

  • Preferred: Experience writing progress notes in the medical record
