Apprentice Controls Technician

Job Description Summary

The Apprentice Controls Technician is an entry-level, hands-on role designed to develop technical expertise in industrial automation, robotics, and controls systems. This structured apprenticeship provides progressive training and real-world experience supporting automation projects, troubleshooting equipment, and maintaining manufacturing systems.
The apprentice will work alongside experienced Controls Technicians and Engineers to gain practical knowledge in PLC programming, robotics, electrical systems, and automation integration while completing formal coursework and competency milestones.

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with installation and integration of automated systems, robotics, and manufacturing equipment
  • Support troubleshooting of production issues involving PLCs, robotics, and electrical systems
  • Help maintain and back up programs for automated equipment and control systems
  • Participate in preventive and predictive maintenance activities for automation systems
  • Assist in implementing automation upgrades and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Work with cross-functional teams to reduce downtime, scrap, and inefficiencies
  • Support documentation of system changes, maintenance records, and troubleshooting efforts
  • Learn to read and interpret electrical diagrams, schematics, and technical documents
  • Follow all safety procedures including LOTO and electrical safety standards

Required Skills and Education

Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Basic understanding of electrical or mechanical systems
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability
  • Interest in automation, robotics, and manufacturing technology
  • Ability to use hand tools and basic testing equipment
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to learn and complete required coursework and certifications
Preferred Qualifications
  • Exposure to PLCs, robotics, or industrial maintenance
  • Ability to read electrical schematics (or willingness to learn)
  • Experience with manufacturing or technical environments
