The highest level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role job classification is the Lead Technologist. This job is not part of a standard progression. The job requires a business case justification substantiating the necessity of a Lead role in conjunction with the enterprise Professional titling guidelines. Lead Engineering Technologists provide technical expertise to solve complex problems, and utilize the leadership skills necessary to oversee governance of specific program areas, often on a fleet-wide basis. Incumbents engage in strategic oversight and management of work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently as well as coach and mentor others.

The person in this position will be a part of the Asset Design Team for the Central Zone, responsible for managing vendor workload, reviewing and approving MYRP, customer and any other large Distribution designs, as well as providing SME support for the Zone. The design and review work in this group includes Distribution design support for underground and overhead designs with associated estimates, CAF review, and Distribution Standards support.

This position is expected to collaborate positively with Area Operations Support groups including Highway Relocation Team, DTUG Engineering, and Zone Engineering as well as other internal stakeholders including Project Management, Resource Planning and Scheduling, Construction Management, Government and Community Relations, Environmental Health and Safety, Land Services, and Legal as needed.

Responsibilities - With minimal supervision and ability to work independently as well as direct the work of others:

  • Ensure a detailed design that meets the requirements prescribed by our various internal and external stakeholders (Distribution Standards, City/Municipalities/NCDOT etc.) is released to construction

  • Ensure the designs released are the most cost effective, safe, constructable, and reliable as possible.

  • Must be customer focused and responsive. Develops positive working relationships with internal and external customers to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and make decisions that may affect the work of the team.

  • Facilitate communication with off-site vendors on how to negotiate effectively with customers and stakeholders for mutually positive outcomes.

  • Adapts quickly to changes in scope, schedule, or cost and provides updates to necessary stakeholders

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities

  • Perform job site coordination activities to facilitate needs of customers and construction crews as needed

  • Manage multiple projects and customers simultaneously to assure timely, successful completion of projects resulting in high levels of customer & stakeholder satisfaction.

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems in area of expertise. Requires full engagement with the industry and other utilities to constantly assess how Duke's program is structured and implementing best practices in areas of expertise.

  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Oversee projects from conception to completion, including resolving both design and construction constraints and partnering with other organizations to ensure a successful outcome.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies. Incumbents are expected to engage in frequent working group phone calls and face-to-face meetings to coordinate and implement changes as a result of fleet and recognize industry best practices.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysisof moderate scope and complexity.

  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance. Assists in developing appropriate curriculum to develop others in given area of subject matter expertise.

  • Coaches and mentors other Engineering Technologists and early career Engineers.

  • Practices a high level of both personal Safety and safe driving practices.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Six+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Engineering Technology, OR

  • Eight+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with an Associate Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, OR

  • HS/GED and 10+ years equivalent experience without a degree, AND

  • Valid Drivers' License

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build cooperative working relationships across multiple levels of the organization and across departmental boundaries

  • Broad knowledge of distribution systems, standards & equipment, and associated safety policies, practices, and procedures

  • Demonstrates skills applying leadership in the areas of technical project management, program oversight and/or governance

  • Leverages past knowledge to document and improve processes for increased efficiency

  • Understanding of complex engineering theories and principles.

  • Understanding of nuanced practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to positively interact with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Experience with AutoCad

  • PMP Designation

Working Conditions

Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
