The Murtha Cancer Center Research Program (MCCRP), located at Home Office A Bethesda, MD, is the cancer program of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). MCCRP is seeking a Deputy Director, Murtha Cancer Center Research Program to direct and manage the Military Cancer Research Network of Murtha. This position will report directly to the Director/Principal Investigator of MCCRP. Will assist in developing and managing the research strategic framework of MCCRP and its portfolio to include but not limited to further expansion of the Cancer Clinical Trials Network, Data acquisition and Specimen and Data Quality elements coming from the Network, and projects with Federal and Non-Federal Partners.

  • Provides oversight and operational leadership for the day-to-day management of the MCCRP Military Cancer Research Network.
  • Directs and is responsible for all data acquisition elements coming from the Network to include quality assurance and efficiency of both biospecimens and clinical data supporting the research; oversees the clinical data team.
  • Assist in the direction of clinical research activities, problem solves research-related issues, serves as a liaison for communicating with research implementation sites.
  • Maintains effective and timely communication with scientific collaborators and Network Site Principal Investigators; serves as a senior representative of MCCRP and in this capacity, demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Leads the planning, execution, and oversight of select research projects.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of state-of-the-art research principles and theories, including human biospecimen acquisition.
  • Initiates high-impact team science research projects.
  • Works closely with and advises the Director of MCCRP on translational research matters.
  • Significantly contributes to MCCRP scientific publications.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

    Direct Supervisor:

  • Direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities.


Education and Experience

  • Doctoral of Degree (MD) required.
  • 10+ years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experienced pathologist (with biospecimen acquisition experience), and/or clinician, and/or researcher in the field of oncology.
  • Knowledge of and experience in human biospecimen acquisition including CAP accreditation processes; awareness of scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical and/or pathology bench procedures.
  • Ability to lead an effective team.
  • Board certification in their field; Fellowship training preferred.
  • Laboratory medical director's experience preferred.
  • Extensive experience in the field of human research biospecimens acquisition required.
  • Clinician in the field of medicine including Pathology.
  • May require U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3 Secret Clearance.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office or clinical setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $152,500 - $253,100. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
