What to Expect
The purpose of the Tesla Materials Engineering organization is tofacilitatethe Tesla Mission of building a world of amazingabundance through theidentification, development and insertion of advanced materials and processes. In this role,you willapply thefundamentals of material sciencetodevelopmaterials and processes,with an emphasis on gearingmaterials, processing, and manufacturingtechnology.This role also will besupporting other Tesla Engineering and Manufacturing functions with materialsexpertise.
What You'll Do
- Contribute to the development of new materials and manufacturing processes that revolutionize Tesla's products
- Evaluate trade-offs between material performance, cost, and manufacturability to support material selection
- Assist in translating qualitative design needs into quantifiable material requirements and document them in material specifications
- Develop and execute test plans to characterize application-specific material properties and translate results into design values for detailed engineering use
- Drive root cause analysis and issue resolution of material-related issues
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent experience
- Strong knowledge in physical metallurgy, mechanical behavior of materials, thermodynamics, and phase transformations
- Strong knowledge and demonstrated success in maturation of materials and processes for gearing applications
- Demonstrated experience in gear failure modes and root cause analysis
- Demonstrated experience in cold forming of gears in simulation (Simufact or similar) and manufacturing
- Experience in gear thermal processing methods for desired microstructure and distortion reduction
- Experience with standard material testing methods and data interpretation (tensile testing, hardness testing, metallography)
- Familiarity with engineering software for data analysis and visualization

Expected Compensation
$91,600 - $234,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
