This position is Part-time, 2-10hr shifts, M-F
Under the supervision and direction of the Chief of Pediatric Surgical Services, the Pediatric Surgical Attending physicians, and the Administrative Director, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for the care of inpatients and outpatients assigned to the Pediatric Surgical Service in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts governing practice. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will obtain patient histories and perform examinations, participate in bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, coordinate tests and consultations, implement treatment plans, communicate with Pediatric Attending Physicians and house staff, communicate with referring physicians, perform patient education, and prepare patients for discharge. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will support the outpatient clinic by triaging patient phone calls, communicating clinic and patient medical supply needs and delivery, assisting in bedside procedures, and seeing post-operative and same-day appointments. Qualifications: *Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. *5+ years of surgical and pediatric experience, preferred. *Experience in treating pediatric patients, required *Experience in ostomy care, wound care, or bowel management, preferred. *Must maintain this certification by completing required Continuing Medical Education credits and completing recertification guidelines as indicated by specialty. *Qualified in basic and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) as established by the American Heart Association. Skills: *Possess the ability to care for critically ill pediatric patients with a broad range of medical and surgical problems. *Possess the maturity, self-confidence, and ability to follow complex patient management plans as directed by the attending surgeon. *Eligible for state and federally controlled substances registration. *Diagnose and treat health problems; obtain patient histories, perform comprehensive physical exams, do simple diagnostic tests, prepare a diagnosis and implement treatment procedures for illnesses; and prescribe medications. General Summary The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed provider. The NP is responsible for assessing and managing various patient populations, including those with medical and/or surgical conditions, as well as providing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, developing appropriate plans of care, and conducting ongoing evaluations. May also perform additional duties, such as precepting a small group of learners. Does this position require Patient Care? Yes Essential Functions -Provides direct care, counseling, and education to a designated patient population in ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural settings. -Performs complete histories and physical examinations. -Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests. -Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings. -Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures. -Consistently provides high-quality and timely documentation, including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries. -Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
