Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Energy Storage Research & Analysis Department Manager to work in our Energy and Environment Science and Technology directorate. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. This role will report to the Division Director for Integrated Energy Technologies.

About the Team

The Energy Storage Research & Analysis group advances next generation battery technologies through rigorous data driven and physics based research. The team investigates electrochemical fundamentals, identifies performance drivers, and evaluates systems across real world and accelerated testing environments. This work directly supports INL's mission to strengthen national energy security.

Position Overview
As the Department Manager, you will lead a multidisciplinary team performing critical R&D in advanced energy storage technologies. You will oversee department strategy, execution, operational effectiveness, and staff leadership while engaging internal partners and external stakeholders across DOE, industry, and federal agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage departmental operations through supervisors and technical professionals within established INL policies.
  • Oversee activities of significant organizational impact, influencing methods, techniques, and team outcomes.
  • Manage budgets, schedules, staffing plans, and performance expectations to ensure goals are met.
  • Supervise teams performing similar work; may include managing supervisors and both exempt and non exempt employees.
  • Allocate resources and determine strategies to meet objective based assignments.
  • Recommend policy updates and implement procedures spanning multiple disciplines.
  • Contribute to long term departmental and divisional objectives, conduct technical research and participate actively in R&D strategy.
  • Collaborate across groups, engaging frequently with supervisors, customers, peers, and external partners.
  • Communicate and present technical findings, recommendations, and program updates across disciplines.
  • Serve as a third level manager with human resource responsibilities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree required with a minimum of 5 years' relevant experience.
  • Minimum 2 years professional leadership experience managing larger teams.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Desired Experience:

  • Experience at a DOE national laboratory, DOE, or experience in engaging with DOE.
  • Experience leading research and development activities in batteries or other electrochemical technologies.
  • Experience in engaging program sponsors at DOE, industry and other federal agencies.
  • Ability to obtain an Q clearance
  • Ability to travel up to 20%

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required. Job Information:

  • The target pay range for this position is ($158,712- $237,174) annually. The full pay range is ($107,844 - $274,980). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
