| Position Highlights |
The University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine (UA-CVM) invites applications for a faculty position with a focus on veterinary clinical pathology. The Veterinary Pathology Supervisor provides leadership, oversight, and diagnostic service for the pathology section of a veterinary diagnostic laboratory, encompassing necropsy, biopsy, and cytology services, as well as coordination of the veterinary diagnostic clinical year rotation. This position requires versatility, expertise in diagnostic pathology, a strong interest in solving complex veterinary diagnostic cases, and a passion for teaching. The role operates within a highly collaborative environment, working across laboratory sections to ensure integrated, non-siloed diagnostic services. The Pathology Supervisor ensures that testing meets the needs of internal and external clients, including state and federal regulatory agencies. Responsibilities include management of a small team of pathologists and cross-trained technicians, with an emphasis on fostering collaboration, technical development, and operational excellence. Teaching responsibilities center on clinical instruction, including development of clinical coursework, instruction in necropsy, and coordination with other laboratory sections to support comprehensive training. Work is performed in BSL-2 and BSL-2+ laboratory environments. Strict adherence to biosafety, biosecurity, regulatory requirements, and quality management systems are essential. | Duties & Responsibilities |
- Provide
necropsy and biopsy diagnostic pathology services across all species (excluding nonhuman primates). - Coordinate
case management, including records oversight, client communication, and facilitation of ancillary testing with internal and external laboratories. - Maintain
competency in cytologic evaluation to support diagnostics. - Represent
the laboratory at meetings, conferences, and stakeholder engagements, and support outreach to regulatory agencies, industry partners, and the veterinary community. - Lead
and contribute to research initiatives that enhance diagnostic capabilities and surveillance efforts. - Oversee
a small team of technicians, fostering cross-training, workflow coordination, mentoring, and professional development. Promote a collaborative, positive laboratory culture and ensure team adherence to laboratory safety, biosafety, quality assurance, and regulatory standards. Coordinate staffing, training, and cross-training to maintain flexibility and operational readiness. - Maintain
and enhance quality management systems, including SOP review, internal audits, proficiency testing, and documentation. - Ensure
compliance with accreditation, regulatory, and biosafety standards, and oversee processes to support reproducibility, accuracy, and consistency across testing platforms. - Lead
assay development, optimization, validation, and implementation to expand diagnostic capabilities, and introduce improvements in methodologies, workflows, instrumentation, and overall laboratory efficiency and rigor. - Coordinate
core and elective diagnostic pathology rotation courses for clinical year veterinary students, including development and maintenance of instructional materials, facilitation of guided learning activities, grading, and assessment of student performance including timely formative and summative feedback. - Lead
applied case discussions, coordinate cross-sectional learning activities with other laboratory units, and provide student mentorship.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Broad knowledge of veterinary anatomic pathology, including necropsy and surgical biopsy diagnostics across multiple species. Competency in diagnostic cytology evaluation is also desirable.
- Ability to lead and mentor a small laboratory team, with strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.

| Minimum Qualifications |
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree (or international equivalent) required.
- Board certification or board eligibility in veterinary pathology (ACVP or ECVP) is required, Anatomic pathologist preferred but Clinical pathologists are welcome to apply.
- A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience is required, including at least two years in a managerial or supervisor role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- An additional advanced degree in a related field (PhD, MS or MPH) is preferred.
- Experience interpreting and communicating diagnostic case findings, understanding of regulatory testing programs and providing guidance to clients.
- Experience teaching veterinary students in discussion-based learning.
- Work experience in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory environment.
