SUMMARY

Investigators with the Montgomery County Office of the Public Defender play a vital role in the pursuit of justice by providing essential investigative support for adult and juvenile clients involved in criminal legal matters. As key members of the defense team, investigators gather, analyze, and document evidence to help build strong, fact-driven defenses on behalf of our clients. Responsibilities include reviewing case materials such as police reports, witness statements, and physical evidence; locating and interviewing witnesses; collecting records; obtaining surveillance footage; and photographing relevant locations or items. Investigators also maintain detailed case notes and organize evidence to support trial strategy. Successful candidates are driven by a commitment to truth, justice, and client-centered advocacy. They are meticulous, organized, and dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes for the individuals we serve. Investigators work under the supervision of the Chief Investigator and collaborate closely with trial attorneys based on case assignments.


*Position covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Performing comprehensive and exhaustive investigation of assigned criminal matters.
* Gathering of records, reports, and other documentary materials (i.e. cell records, surveillance etc.).
* Locating and interviewing lay and expert witnesses;
* Reviewing and analyzing discovery and other case documentation.
* Crime scene investigation and recreation.
* Knowledge of photography and the workings of cellular phones, tablets, and related technology.
* Preparing comprehensive and exhaustive fact chronological summaries, written memoranda, and other reports.
* Interviewing clients and witnesses.
* Writing comprehensive investigation reports.
* Testifying in court as needed.
* Perform additional duties as specified by the Chief Public Defender or Chief Investigator.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EducationandCredentials

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field.
  • High School Diploma/GED with significant law enforcement and/or private investigations experience.

ExperienceandSkills

  • Experience in investigations required. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to engage with and establish rapport with people from a variety of different backgrounds.
  • Position requires considerable resourcefulness, creativity, initiative and drive.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate facts, evidence and related information.
  • Ability to be tactful, exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Knowledge of cameras, cell phones, recording and measuring devices required.
  • Must possess a current PA Driver' License.
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WorkEnvironment and Physical Requirements

  • The work environment varies depending on investigative needs but includes general office environment, site visits, facility visits, meeting clients and/or witnesses in jails, prisons, and in the community.
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, or walking in an office environment is required.
  • Significant and repeated use of a keyboard.

Employees that are able to show proof of general professional proficiency via a certification in the Spanish language will be utilized when needed and will be given a salary increase of 5%.
