Job Description

Job Purpose



This position focuses on the design and engineering of custom tooling for the fabrication of composite structures using manufacturing processes which include autoclave cured prepreg, resin transfer molding, compression molding, and other liquid molding techniques. This job requires an individual with an understanding of mechanical design, composite structures, resin transfer molding (RTM), and surfacing techniques as well as some familiarity with material science, thermodynamics, and ergonomics.

Job Responsibilities



  • Design complex tooling systems for high performance composite systems
  • Select and specify the materials best suited for tool applications
  • Work with Manufacturing Engineers and Production Technicians to implement new designs, resolve manufacturing problems and support the manufacturing process
  • Create SOW's for all tooling related activities with direction from ES-T. This requires the ability to create complete, detailed and uniform documentation for tooling vendors with information interpreted from tooling concepts, existing SOW's and engineering input.
  • Participate in design reviews to provide data input, calculations, conclusions and ideas.
  • Compile information from both internal and external sources for presentation in reviews, input to designs and developing conclusions.
  • Hands on resource available for tooling activities such as inspection, receiving, issue coordination.
  • Create purchase requisitions in SAP and track tooling components using SAP.
  • Intelligent interfacing with tooling vendors and material suppliers at the direction of the ES-T.
  • Communicate data results into engineering concepts/designs.
  • Interface with CAD designer to implement and validate data/analysis results.

Experience/Education/Skills

  • Knowledge of assembly, RTM, and autoclave tooling, as well as mechanical design principles.
  • Basic knowledge of all relevant guidance documentation; ANSI, ASTM, NEC, NFPA, OSHA, etc.
  • 2-year degrees in a relevant engineering discipline preferred. Experience may be substituted for education at management's discretion.
  • Understanding of composites fabrication is a plus
  • Familiarity and/or experience with machining processes
  • Capability to understand and interpret engineering drawings, with a solid understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Use of manual inspection instruments.
  • Special consideration will be given to applicants who also have experience or training in aerospace composites or textile manufacturing.
  • Experience with CATIA V5 required; SolidWorks and Siemens NX are desirable.
  • Experience or demonstrated potential to create tool designs based on an understanding of the composite manufacturing process
  • Ability to create, understand and interpret engineering drawings
