Overview

LMI is seeking a Data Science Intern with a strong background in statistical and econometric analysis to support our passport demand forecasting activities with the Department of State Passport Bureau (CA/PPT). This role will play an important part in developing, testing, and refining models used to forecast multiple forms of passport demand across the organization. The ideal candidate combines rigorous analytical thinking with creativity, technical curiosity, and sound judgment.

Responsibilities

    Rapidly prototype and iterate on new models, methodologies, and analytical libraries that rely on cutting edge statistical and other tools. Assess their strengths and limitations.
  • Critically evaluate data sources, modeling assumptions, and results, identifying risks, biases, and sources of uncertainty.
  • Actively monitor US passport demand; survey results; policy developments; travel, economic, geopolitical, and other trends; and creatively explore means of using these data to forecast impacts on passport demand.
  • Translate complex analytical findings into clear, actionable insights for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Work independently to explore novel approaches while applying healthy skepticism and methodological discipline.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, tools, and best practices in forecasting, statistics, and data science.
  • Explore customer needs and help identify ways to add value.


Qualifications

  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, R, etc.)
  • Foundational coursework or experience in statistics, econometrics, or data science
  • Self-motivated and driven to explore complex analytical challenges
  • Interest in data analysis, modeling, and forecasting
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically about models, data, and assumptions
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining methodological rigor
  • Effective communication skills to present insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Enrollment in or completion of a Master's program in STEM, economics, finance, or other data-related field

Desired Attributes

  • Familiarity with statistical and machine-learning frameworks (e.g., statsmodels, pandas, numpy, matplotlib, etc.)
  • Experience applying time series analysis techniques (e.g., ARIMA, VAR) or exploring machine-learning models for forecasting
  • Comfortable rapidly prototyping, testing, and iterating on statistical models
  • Creative yet pragmatic mindset; able to challenge assumptions while aligning with organizational goals
  • Interest in exploring the intersection of policy, economics, and travel trends
  • Familiarity with cloud environments like AWS (serverless technologies are a plus)
Other Information
  • Interns will need to provide their own transportation to and from work and locate and arrange for their own housing.

  • All intern positions at LMI are paid positions.
