Requisition Id16135 Overview: Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a senior leader to guide our biodiversity and biogeochemical research within the Environmental Sciences Division (ESD). ESD is an interdisciplinary research and development organization with more than 75 years of achievement in local, regional, national, and international environmental research. Our vision is to expand scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that strengthen the nation's leadership in sustaining Earth's natural resources. Our R&D staff conduct research, develop technology, and perform analyses to understand and assess the responses of environmental systems at the human-environment interface, as well as the consequences of alternative energy and environmental strategies. This leadership role will serve as Group Leader for the newly structured Energy-Ecosystem Interactions Group. Researchers in this group advance predictive science to anticipate ecological consequences of energy production and support resilient energy decisions. This group investigates ecological processes and the complex multiscale interactions between energy production systems and these processes. Research centers on identifying mechanisms through which energy generation, infrastructure, and operations influence ecosystem structure, function, and services. Using integrative modeling, data synthesis, and systems analysis, the group develops predictive tools to evaluate ecological outcomes under alternative energy scenarios. The group places strong emphasis on forecasting cumulative and long-term impacts on biodiversity, hydrology, biogeochemical cycles, and environmental health. Results are used to assess trade-offs among energy security, environmental resilience, and ecosystem integrity, providing decision-relevant insights for policymakers, planners, and energy stakeholders.
