Job Title:Senior Central Utility Plant Manager
Location:Poughkeepsie, NY

What this job involves

This critical leadership position oversees the 24/7 operations of a large-scale central utility plant, managing complex infrastructure including high-pressure steam, chilled water, HVAC, compressed air, and distribution systems. You'll lead a skilled team of operators and technicians while driving operational excellence, energy efficiency, and safety compliance. This role requires a strategic, results-oriented leader who can manage complex utility systems, respond to emergencies around the clock, and implement innovative solutions to optimize plant performance and sustainability.

Your day-to-day tasks will include:
  • Oversee and manage 24/7 central utility plant operations, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of utility plant operators, refrigeration technicians, boiler technicians, controls technicians, and support staff through effective training programs and performance management

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventive maintenance schedules and processes to maximize equipment reliability and minimize operational downtime

  • Drive operational improvements by identifying efficiency opportunities, implementing advanced technologies, and coordinating energy demand with cross-functional teams to align utility outputs with organizational needs

  • Manage plant budgets, inventory, and procurement processes while overseeing CUP-related infrastructure projects from planning through execution

  • Respond to system emergencies 24/7 (boiler failures, chiller failures, water leaks, refrigerant leaks, steam condensate leaks), operate valves to isolate issues, recommend repair options, and monitor resolution

  • Provide engineering support and technical assistance to other facility departments across the client campus, describing required system repairs in detail and communicating effectively with JLL and client management

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or significant and verifiable related skills and experience

  • Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience in utility plant operations

  • At least 5 years in a leadership or management role overseeing utility plant operations

  • Proven technical expertise in operation, maintenance, and optimization of high-pressure steam systems, HVAC, chilled water, compressed air, and utility distribution systems

  • Demonstrated track record of successfully managing large-scale plant operations with focus on safety, reliability, and cost-efficiency

  • Deep understanding of relevant industry standards and regulations, particularly safety and environmental compliance requirements

  • Ability to respond to emergencies 24/7 and make quick, informed decisions under pressure

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Maritime or Navy experience, bringing expertise in complex infrastructure operations and disciplined operational protocols

  • Certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Professional Engineer (PE), or equivalent credentials

  • Solid understanding of energy efficiency and sustainability practices with ability to integrate these principles into plant operations

  • Experience implementing continuous improvement methodologies and driving operational changes that enhance plant performance and reduce costs

  • Strong project management capabilities with experience managing infrastructure projects from conception through completion

  • Knowledge of current industry trends and technological advancements in utility plant operations

  • Experience with crisis management, emergency response planning, and execution of contingency plans for operational disruptions

Estimated compensation for this position:

110,000.00 - 140,000.00 USD per year

This range is an estimate and actual compensation may differ. Final compensation packages are determined by various considerations including but not limited to candidate qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations.
