Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Conducts analyses on organic and inorganic substances to determine and evaluate their chemical and physical properties including radioactivity. Prepares and analyzes samples, maintains lab safety protocols, and documents results for research or regulatory purposes. Develops and applies new analytical approaches. Performs special long-term projects of a confidential nature and special analyses on non-routine samples. Provides consultation, training, and trouble-shooting for instrument, software and engineering problems as required.
  • Conducts specific chemical and physical analyses, using a wide variety of laboratory instrumentation and complex analytical methodology to isolate, identify and quantify possible hazardous components of soil, water and other material.
  • Performs continual maintenance and operating protocol for laboratory instrumentation to ensure optimal operation and efficiency.
  • Performs analytical procedures in accordance with established permit or licensing requirements.
  • Evaluates analytical data for completeness and validity of the data.
  • Provides technical knowledge for treatability development.
  • Performs Alpha-Spectroscopy sample preparation.
  • Provides back-up to Laboratory Technician as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements/Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) instrument function, producibility, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • Advanced knowledge of sample preparation and analysis requirements of alpha spectroscopy methods
  • Advanced knowledge of treatment standards and reporting requirements of gamma spectroscopy methods
  • Advanced knowledge of chemical reactions and compatibilities
  • Advanced knowledge of radiochemistry methods for the analysis of byproducts found in commercial nuclear plants as well as, source material, special nucleal materials, and transuranics.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate scientific findings to others

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds; handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder
  • Ability to use hands to accomplish tasks as assigned
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend/stoop, crouch, squat/kneel and twist at the waist
  • Ability to effectively communicate; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
  • Ability to see close and distance; basic colors/shades
  • Ability to work inside an office
  • Ability to work with power tools and moving objects
  • Ability to wear chemical resistant coveralls and respiratory protection
  • Ability to work alone
  • Ability to operate equipment and perform under deadline pressure




Minimum Education, Experience and Certification Requirements
Education

  • Ph. D. required in Analytical Chemistry or related fields and 1 to 3 years experience; or M.S. and 3 to 5 years experience; or B.S. and 5 to 7 years experience

Certifications

  • None required

Required Experience

  • 1 to 3 years of experience with a Ph.D., 3 to 5 years of experience with an M.S. or 5 to 7 years of experience with a B.S.

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years instrument experience within an Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory preferred
  • Experience with environmental sample analysis preferred
  • Experience working in a commercial or nuclear facility radiochemistry lab, preferred
