We are seeking a Career Development Coordinator to join the Office of Experiential Learning in the Division for Teaching and Learning (DTL). This position will provide leadership, advising, and mentorship to scholars engaging in impactful experiential learning opportunities through 1-on-1 advising, small-group engagement, and workshops facilitation.

This position will manage, implement programming, and provide advising for the OEL internship program and the OEL career and internship hub. Additionally, this position will assist with the organization, leadership, and professional development of summer and academic-year skill-building and mentoring initiatives within the office.

We seek a team-focused, student-centered, and outcome-oriented individual who works collaboratively with OEL staff, students, campus partners and alumni to offer transformative mentorship and career skills-building opportunities. This position will work closely with an inclusive, outcome-orientated, and dedicated team focused on student engagement and success in high-impact practices. We approach our work with high standards, a strong work ethic, diversity in thoughts and experiences, and forward creativity as we strive to make a positive impact on UW-Madison students. This position provides a lot of variety to someone who likes to learn new things, is a motivated self-starter, has excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, enjoys multi-tasking, and thrives in a vibrant student-focused environment. The candidate is expected to be able to work independently with minimum supervision, collaborate effectively amongst a team, and have a genuine desire to work with students from a variety of backgrounds.

Expected responsibilities for this position include the following:


  • Contribute to the development of the strategic vision for the OEL internship program and the OEL career & internship hub, and facilitate initiatives in alignment with these goals.

  • Manage and provide administrative tasks for the OEL Internship Program and the OEL career & internship hub.

  • Exercise supervisory authority, including recruiting, hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving student employees (which may include graduate assistants) for the OEL internship and mentoring initiatives.

  • Use data, assessments, and evidence-based practices to lead the planning, coordination, administration, and facilitation of 1-on-1 and small group advising, mentorship initiatives, and professional development programming for students, OEL interns and supervisors/mentors.

  • Increase student access to career and skill-building opportunities, including developing programming and building career and internship pathways specifically tailored to first-generation and limited-income scholars.

  • Create and disseminate marketing communications, emails, and social media posts for career-centered opportunities.

  • Knowledgeable about best-practices within the career services field, including familiarity with tools frequently utilized to support career development (i.e. Handshake, LinkedIn, Big Interview, etc.).

  • Support summer research programming and academic-year mentoring initiatives by providing professional development, supervision, and organization for the programs.

  • Actively and intentionally engage with the career services community, including building new partnerships, strengthening existing collaborations, and seeking out opportunities for joint programming.


This position is full-time, 100%.

Terminal, 2-year appointment. This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding.

This position requires most of the work to be performed in-person, onsite in the OEL office during normal operating hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30am - 4:30pm. Some events and 1-on-1 advising will take place during the evenings and occasional weekends, with the flexibility to work remotely 1 day/week.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • May identify and maintain a professional network of employers or other stakeholders to facilitate career exploration and employment opportunities for students
  • Responds to questions and provides information regarding student services, policies, procedures, and employment preparation
  • Develops and delivers career development programming and resource materials across various mediums to provide education to students
  • Educates or advises students and recent alumni individually or in groups through various mediums about career exploration, self-assessment, skills, materials development, and career decisions
  • Support and facilitate mentoring initiatives that promote skill-development

  • Recruit, hire, and manage student employees (which may include graduate assistants) of the OEL Internship Program

  • Contribute to the development of the strategic plan and facilitate initiatives in alignment with the goals of OEL and DTL

  • Participates in the campus-wide career services community, providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college/unit

The Office of Experiential Learning (OEL) supports high-impact practices (HIPs) that connect scholars to real-world experiences. Through intentional programming, individual advising, and deliberate networking, OEL guides undergraduate scholars from a variety of backgrounds and programs, including first-generation, limited-income, and scholars involved in student success programs within DTL.

The OEL Internship Program supports the growth of youth leaders at UW-Madison by placing talented students within a variety of high-impact employment opportunities on-campus. Throughout the program, interns engage in marketable work experiences that combine their interests while building a desirable skill set instrumental to post-graduation success. OEL Interns accepted into the program also have access to individualized mentorship, structured professional development workshops, and 1-on-1 career advising that will support their growth professionally and personally as they work in environments dedicated to supporting student success at UW-Madison. An extension of this work includes the career and internship hub. The career and internship hub works to increase access to career paths and internships for OEL students. Utilizing workshops, individual and small group advising, and strategic partnerships with other campus career centers, students receive the support they need to build desirable and robust career-related skills sets.

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $54,000 (but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications).

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience (may include undergraduate or graduate level internship/practicum experience) in career services, academic advising, student services, alumni relations, human resources, recruitment, or related field

  • Previous experience working with undergraduates in 1-on-1 and small group settings from a variety of backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with many different audiences

  • Cultural competency: ability to work in a diverse environment and serve students, staff, faculty, alumni, and employers from a wide variety of backgrounds

  • Proven ability to lead, plan, organize and facilitate professional development programs, workshops, and events across multiple communication mediums

  • Demonstrated initiative to lead, prioritize, and follow through with multi-faceted tasks and concurrent projects to meet deadlines and established outcomes

  • Demonstrated high professional standards, curiosity, empathy, and active listening

  • Use proactive, practical and data-driven approaches to problem-solving and implementation of appropriate solutions

  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences in a diplomatic, concise and professional manner using a variety of mediums

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail & accuracy


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of hiring trends, experience using career-related tools, and familiarity with skills/attributes desired by post-graduate employers

  • 1-on-1 and small group career advising, recruitment and employment/workforce experience

  • Proven ability to develop strategic partnerships and collaborations

  • Experience in crafting effective marketing materials, website designs, and social media posts for a diverse audience

  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting outcome-oriented data to inform programmatic decisions and drive outcomes

  • Experience managing, supporting, recruiting, and hiring student workers

  • Demonstrated ability to manage uncertainty and remain flexible in a dynamic and evolving environment

  • Previous experiences conducting undergraduate research, studying abroad, and/or completing an internship
