Summary Description of Position

Primary responsibilities are to drive over-the-road ready-mix trucks from one location to another as needed by Vulcan and directed by their supervisor. The position may drive or "shuttle" trucks from a Vulcan ready-mix plant to the maintenance shop, or from the maintenance shop back to a ready-mix plant. The position may also shuttle unused ready-mix trucks from one ready-mix plant to another or elsewhere as needed. The position may also be required to drive or shuttle passenger vehicles or maintenance service trucks as needed by Vulcan or directed by their supervisor.

The position may be required to operate a passenger vehicle to pick up or deliver parts. The position may be required to perform the following housekeeping / clean up duties to include but not limited to; cleaning, washing, sweeping, and shoveling material. The position may be required to organize or inventory parts, organize or file paperwork, and enter data into computer systems as needed. The position may be required to perform any general support/labor duties as needed or directed by their supervisor.

What You'll Do:

Promote Safety. Take an active role in prioritizing safety throughout the operation for yourself and others at all times in accordance with MSHA and Vulcan standards.

Driving Duties

  • Receive and comprehend written, printed, or verbal driving directions

  • Safely and efficiently drive a ready mix truck or other OTR vehicle from one destination to another.

  • Rinse or clean truck/vehicle as directed or needed prior to driving or shuttling

  • Must be able to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; grip, climb, reach, shovel, squat, crawl, or pull, push, as well as, bend

  • Will work outdoors and exposed to varying and/or extreme weather conditions (i.e., heat, wet, cold, etc)

  • Employee must be able to work required overtime and flexible work schedule.

  • Must be able to speak, read, and have a working knowledge of the English language

Vehicle Maintenance
  • Perform pre-trip/post-trip vehicle safety inspection; document and report vehicle condition at beginning and end of each shift.
  • Check all vehicle fluid levels daily and add fluids if necessary
  • Clean outside of vehicle to ensure absence of concrete build-up throughout each shift
  • May assist mechanics in vehicle repair and change tires as necessary
Other
  • Maintain daily reports as required by DOT and Company regulations
  • May be required to operate front end loader to feed ready mix plant and move material as needed
  • Assist in maintenance and upkeep of yard, plant and office
  • Comply with all Safety, Health, Environmental and other Company policies, procedures and requirements

Inspect and Maintain Equipment. Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections and accurately complete daily mobile equipment reports. Clean the outside of the vehicle and chutes to ensure the absence of concrete build-up at the end of each shift.

Document and Record Information. Complete all forms, service reports, tickets, and required paperwork to ensure organization of documents and needed paperwork.

Coordinate with Dispatch. Work closely with dispatch, maintenance, and plant management to facilitate the flow of information required to provide good customer service.

Perform General Physical Activities. Perform physical activities such as cleaning all areas on the vehicle, climbing a ladder to inspect loads of ready mix concrete, hanging mixer chutes, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Additional Responsibilities. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Skills You'll Need:

Education. High School Diploma/GED or an equivalent combination of training and work experience.

Ready to Drive. Must possess a commercial driver's license and have a valid DOT physical or the ability to get one.

Experience. Three (3) years of experience driving commercially licensed vehicles preferred. Two (2) years experience driving ready mix concrete trucks preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Must have sufficient level of education to understand oral and written instructions of a technical nature relating to products and vehicles. Must have excellent driving skills and the ability to operate vehicles to ensure the safety of himself, the general public, and other Vulcan employees.

Knowledge of Best Practices. Knowledge of general principles and practices of operating and servicing ready-mix trucks is preferred. Experience with Department of Transportation rules and regulations is preferred.

Flexibility. Must be willing to work overtime and extended hours depending on customer and company demands. Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and tolerate being exposed to loud noises.

Clean Driving Record. Must have a clean and safe driving record and the ability to safely operate and control equipment while on the job.

Hourly Range. The hourly range for this role is between $23.88 - $35.16. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate's compensation, we consider a number of factors, including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
