The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for an Open-Rank Associate Research Scientist (ARS) or Research Scientist (RS) to provide support to the Science Program Officer for the United States Scientific Ocean Drilling Coordination Office (SODCO). The ARS or RS will serve as the SODCO Science Program Officer by providing scientific and programmatic input in establishing the SODCO at LDEO. Works with other Principal Investigators (PIs) at LDEO and externally in developing and implementing research projects, collecting and analyzing data, and engaging in outreach initiatives. Will function independently and exercise a high level of expertise. Will receive guidance and direction from, and reports to, the Research Scientist at LDEO serving as the SODCO Director of Science Services and/or the Associate Director of Marine and Large Programs, if needed. Characteristics and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Earth science. Rank will be commensurate with experience (at least two years for ARS; at least four years for RS). Excellent communication, organizational, and writing skills in English are needed. Seagoing experience and a solid record of scientific publications are preferred. Familiarity with scientific ocean drilling and/or large scientific programs is desirable but not required. The appointment is renewable annually upon successful performance evalution and availability of funding. Promotion in the Research Scientist track will be possible, based on experience and performance. The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled. Columbia University benefits accompany this Officer of Research appointment.
