The Assistant Health & Safety Manager supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the facility's health and safety programs. This role works closely with operations, maintenance, HR, and leadership teams to ensure compliance with OSHA and company standards, promote a culture of safety, and reduce risks across all manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to fostering a safe working environment. The Assistant Health & Safety Manager is a key driving force in the development and implementation of a proactive safety culture that aligns with The McWane Way Safety Principal, Value, and Behaviors.

Job Description

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Promote and uphold The McWane Way principles, values, and behaviors.
  • Adhere to safety protocols outline in the Tyler Union Safety Management Program.
  • Assist supervisors and managers in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Follow ergonomic and safe lifting techniques.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and report any issues.

Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned.)

  • Maintain compliance with OSHA and other federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Manage required safety recordkeeping, including incident reports, training records, inspections, and regulatory documentation.
  • Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and verify corrective actions.
  • Conduct and support investigations of incidents, near misses, injuries, and occupational illnesses.
  • Perform rootcause analyses and recommend preventive measures; evaluate adequacy of corrective actions.
  • Report and review findings from investigations, inspections, and environmental testing.
  • Interview employees and supervisors to gather information related to incidents or unsafe conditions.
  • Evaluate work environments and design programs to prevent injuries from chemical, physical, biological, or ergonomic hazards.
  • Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment, ensuring safety devices are properly installed and functional.
  • Assess new equipment, chemicals, and processes for potential safety impacts.
  • Participate in job safety analyses (JSAs) and process hazard reviews.
  • Develop ergonomic solutions to improve work processes and prevent strainrelated injuries.
  • Assist with the design and construction of safety equipment as needed. Support the development and maintenance of emergency response plans.
  • Participate in emergency drills and coordinate improvements to enhance preparedness.
  • Manage inspections and readiness of emergency equipment.
  • Analyze safety data, trends, and KPIs to identify opportunities for risk reduction.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing safety performance.
  • Manage multiple safety-related projects with varying priorities.
  • Educate employees on safety practices and promote a strong safety culture within the organization.
  • Assist in the preparation of safety manuals and guidelines to provide clear instructions for safety procedures.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related discipline; Master's in similar field preferred.
  • Five (5) years of progressive related experience.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is a plus.

Additional Information

Physical & Cognitive Abilities

  • This role involves frequent physical activity, including climbing, walking, standing, stooping, balancing, and handling tools and materials. Employees must be able to lift to 50 pounds, as needed.
  • The work environment varies between a standard office setting and a manufacturing plant. Plant conditions may include exposure to heat, cold, dust, and noise.
  • Regular walks through the plant are required. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as needed, including safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and hard hats.
