Intern, Technical Undergraduate Summer - Nuclear Waste Disposal Research and Analysis, Onsite

We are seeking an Intern Summer - Technical Undergraduate for research in machine learning to predict thermal expansion properties in ceramic materials.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

• Compile datasets of material properties.
• Apply data analytic techniques.
• Develop and evaluate machine learning models.
• Assist in writing research manuscripts.
• Conduct work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
• Present results at meetings or conferences.

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

• Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited related undergraduate program
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
• Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
• Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

• Pursuing a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Experience with machine learning or related artificial intelligence methods.
• Working knowledge of computer programming, scripting, and workflows for large data sets.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a teaming environment.

The Nuclear Waste Disposal Research and Analysis Department executes experimental studies and develops process models to further the scientific bases for safe geologic disposal of high-level nuclear waste. This includes investigation of natural system processes in argillite (clay/shale), crystalline (granitic), and salt host rocks. It also includes investigations of the function and evolution of engineered barrier systems. Research activities encompass waste form behavior, radionuclide release and transport, as well as natural and engineered barrier system performance.
