The Director of the Research Histology Core (RHC) provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for a state-of-the-art histology facility in the Research Resources Center (RRC) in Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) at UIC. This role ensures delivery of high-quality histological services, fosters innovation and supports faculty-driven research initiatives. The Director collaborates closely with a designated faculty advisor and a faculty advisory committee to guide the development of new services, acquisition of advanced instrumentation and implementation of cutting-edge technologies. This Core collaborates closely with the Research Tissue Imaging Core, UIC Biorepository, Cardiovascular Research Core and the Spatial and Genome Technologies Core to deliver a comprehensive experimental workflow from tissue procurement to image analysis.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Leadership & Development
  • Manage and expand the core facility to provide comprehensive histology, slide preparation, advanced staining workflows and multiplex immunostaining.
  • Implement and optimize protocols for large-batch staining and high-throughput multiplex assays to meet complex research needs.
  • Maintain and upgrade instrumentation, ensuring compliance with best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Develop quality control standards for reproducibility and accuracy in all services.

Faculty Engagement & Strategic Planning
  • Work closely with the faculty advisor and faculty advisory committee to identify emerging research needs, prioritize new services and recommend instrumentation upgrades.
  • Facilitate regular meetings with faculty stakeholders to review Core performance and of service , discuss technology trends and align core capabilities with institutional research goals.
  • Collaborate with investigators to develop customized protocols and support grant proposals for instrumentation and technology development.

Staff Development & Management

  • Hire, train and mentor technical staff, research specialists and students to ensure a highly skilled and collaborative team.
  • Establish professional development plans, provide ongoing training, and create opportunities for staff to learn advanced techniques and technologies.
  • Plan, assign and review projects to ensure objectives are met and service quality is maintained.

Financial & Administrative Oversight
  • Oversee budgeting, cost recovery and billing for services rendered.
  • Work with the OVCR Finance and Operations team to negotiate vendor contracts and manage procurement of new instruments and consumables.
  • Develop marketing strategies to expand the client base within the university and external partners.

Training & Outreach
  • Provide educational workshops and hands-on training in histology techniques, digital microscopy and image analysis software.
  • Promote the facility's capabilities through seminars, publications and outreach to academic and industry partners.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, Pathology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years managing a core facility or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in histotechnology, immunostaining (including multiplex), and digital imaging.
  • Strong leadership, communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with image analysis software and data management tools.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with high-throughput workflows and automation in histology.
  • Familiarity with grant writing and external funding strategies.
  • Management experience in an academic or research setting.
