PHYSICAL, MENTAL DEMANDS

  • The work associated with this position requires standing and walking throughout the workday with occasional sitting for prolonged periods of time. Occasional reaching, stooping, bending and kneeling are also required.
  • Light-to-moderate lifting to position patients for procedures or transport. Pushes and pulls on patients' stretchers during transport. Occasionally lifts medical equipment, exerting light-to-moderate physical effort (e.g. move items weighing up to 25 pounds). Physical Requirements: standing and walking most of the day.

Inter-relationships: patient contact, physician contacts, nursing personnel and other members of the health care team.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Generally good; may be exposed to minimum anesthetic gases.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administers or supervises anesthesia for all types of procedures where qualifications allow. Selects, obtains and/or administers the anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic, to maintain the patient's physiologic homeostasis, and to correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia or surgery. Is responsible for the complete medical care of the patient's perioperative care - intra & postop.
  • To provide general, regional, local and monitored anesthesia care services, including induction, maintenance and emergence and to provide professional observation and resuscitative care.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to provide care appropriate to the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric population. This requires the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify age-specific patient needs, and to provide the care needed.
  • Performs clinical teaching to residents, medical students, and nurse anesthetists, and other care providers, particularly with respect to airway management, pharmacology and physiology of anesthetic indications. Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and medications using basic or advanced cardiac life support protocols and to provide medical consultation if required.
  • Conducts a thorough review of patient's charts to include history and physical, diagnostic testing, and a current physical assessment.
  • Implementation of appropriate anesthetic plan based on patient assessment.
  • Selects, applies, and or inserts appropriate noninvasive and invasive modalities for continuous evaluation of the patient's physical status.
  • Demonstrates compliance with departmental policies and procedures and mandatory education requirements including but not limited to safety, infection control, attendance and dress code.
  • Willingness to work on behalf of the department when requested even if this includes off hours for emergency purposes.
  • Develop an area of research interest.

  • Keeps up to date on departmental changes as evidenced by attending staff meetings and other essential meetings and or reading minutes of meetings not attended, seeking clarification as appropriate. Demonstrates understanding and support of departmental changes. This includes any meetings that involve the entire university physician's association.

  • Demonstrates effective communication skills.
  • Maintains neat, timely, accurate, and legible anesthetic records.
  • Willingly adapts to changes in work assignments/environment, systems, procedures, staffing complement and job responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates tact, sensitivity, sound judgment, and a professional attitude when relating with patients and co-workers. Is sensitive to the impact of one's own decisions upon others both within and outside one's own immediate work group.
Hourly Rate Min $182.69
Hourly Rate Max $286.09
