About the Department:


Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason, including but not limited to initial and follow-up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provides services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as-needed basis. SHS operates its main clinic on the Mason Fairfax Campus and smaller clinics on the Mason Square (Arlington) and SciTech Campuses (Prince William).


About the Position:


The Immunization Allergy Specialist manages patient care in both clinics by:



  • Administering allergy injections and immunizations;
  • Maintaining allergy records and vaccine inventory;
  • Coordinating with community allergy specialists; and
  • Ensuring compliance with CDC and ACHA guidelines.


Additional responsibilities include:



  • Leading the annual evaluation of safe needle practices;
  • Supporting Infection Control, CQI, Risk Management, and peer review initiatives;
  • Assisting with medical and immunization supply management; and
  • Acting as a resource for clinic staff and contributing to policy updates.


Responsibilities:


Immunization and Allergy Specialist and Vaccine Coordinator/Annual Flu Clinic Coordinator



  • Effectively manages Allergy and Immunization clinic patient flow, ensuring efficient operations and patient care, and administers immunizations and Allergy Immunotherapy;
  • Transcribes immunization records;
  • Accurately manages vaccine inventory, including monitoring refrigerator temperature, for both in-clinic and off-site clinic needs;
  • Initiates vaccine purchases directly through vendors and, in collaboration with the Associate Director of Nursing, reviews minimum on-hand quantities to request supply orders as needed;
  • Serves as Chairperson for the Sharps Safety and Safe Needle Practices Committee, which is a sub-committee of SHS's Infection Control Committee;
  • Enters new inventory in the EHR and logbook and reconciles inventory weekly to ensure accuracy of documentation and administration;
  • Updates and reports changes to the VIS forms and reviews and revises any Immunization, Flu, and Immunization Records forms with the Associate Medical Director or designee on an annual and as-needed basis;
  • Reviews safe injection practices annually with clinical Team, including review of the current sharp devices used;
  • Provides information to the Risk Management Team for review and recommendations;
  • Provides at least a biannual allergy chart review and reports findings to the Associate Director of Nursing;
  • Acts as a resource and provides Immunization and Allergy training or updates to staff in practices and review; and
  • Collaborates with Nursing for prospective joint flu clinic ventures on the Mason Square and Sci-Tech Campuses.


Clinical Skills and Triage



  • Maintains a safe, efficient, and orderly flow of patients being seen in the clinic and supports smooth coordination while working alongside the provider;
  • Accurately utilizes the EMR and Nurse Order Monitor for documentation and clinic flow monitoring;
  • Delivers safe and effective triage to students walking in or calling the clinic for acute appointments;
  • Utilizes approved protocols for triage and complies with documentation requirements as stated in the Triage policy and procedures;
  • Maintains skills and training in all aspects of required clinical procedures, treatments, patient intake, patient flow, emergency preparedness, laboratory functions and IV placement and management;
  • Completes annual Competency review requirements; and
  • Acts as a resource for BSN students assigned to the clinic for their Community Health Rotation, ensuring effective guidance and supervision while in clinic.


TB Nurse Administrative Tasks



  • Reviews QFT and Chest X-ray results;
  • Monitors results in Medicat and tracks positive TST and QFT reports to ensure students are following up as required;
  • Monitors results in Medicat and tracks CXR reports; and
  • Maintains TB Log to assist with tracking and follow-up with FCHD, ensuring timely tests and treatment as needed.


Departmental Duties



  • Serves on and contributes to one of the clinic committees that meet quarterly;
  • Supports divisional planning initiatives and other special projects as assigned;
  • Actively participates in UL divisional meetings, initiatives, and in-person events to stay connected with divisional and institutional priorities, and to foster a cross-unit collaboration;
  • Participates in professional development workshops and training sessions for staff across the division to promote continuous learning and skill enhancement;
  • Stays informed about best practices, research, and emerging trends in higher education and student support services to ensure SHS remains innovative and responsive to the evolving needs of the student body; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:



  • Associate's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education or experience;
  • Registered Nurse license or BLS certification for Healthcare Providers;
  • Experience typically obtained in 2+ years of nursing experience in a hospital or healthcare setting, separate from clinical experience obtained while seeking a nursing degree;
  • Experience typically obtained in 2+ years in an ambulatory setting, preferably adult medicine, allergy immunotherapy, or college health;
  • Demonstrated experience effectively communicating and engaging with varying audiences;
  • Ability to apply the elements of the Nursing Process including assessment, developing nursing diagnosis, planning, implementing nursing interventions, and evaluating the nursing plan of care;
  • Ability to perform basic nursing functions and treatments;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to communicate and engage effectively with a varying audience of constituents and departmental stakeholders while providing effective customer service;
  • Knowledge of adolescent and adult immunization requirements; and
  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Records.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent combination of education or experience
  • Certification in Ambulatory Care (AMB-BC);
  • Experience in ambulatory care nursing;
  • Experience working with college-aged students;
  • Previous role caring for patients receiving allergy immunotherapy or a leadership role in an allergy office;
  • Knowledge of unique needs of college students;
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills;
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy and IV initiation and monitoring;
  • Knowledge of administering EKGs;
  • Ability to apply Triage skills; and
  • Ability to engage and communicate effectively with colleagues working in hybrid and/or remote work structures.
