The Wisconsin State Journal, a division of Lee Enterprises, is seeking a Local Government Reporter to join our team. National and world events often make the most noise, but local news is where we live. Nothing helps readers connect with their communities more than sound, comprehensive and fearless reporting on local government. Whether they're raising property taxes to pay for additional services, debating ways to combat crime or engaging in misconduct, local government and the people behind it are a rich source of powerful and relevant stories. Some of those want to be told; others try to stay hidden. The Wisconsin State Journal is looking for someone who can sift through the chaff for the best stories out of Madison and Dane County government, build reliable sources, hold authorities accountable and engage readers with stories that demand attention. The ideal candidate will have a sense of urgency and a desire to dig deep, bring public records to light and produce a steady stream of immediate and longer-term stories. At least two years of daily newspaper reporting experience is preferred. To be considered for the position, apply by Aug. 31, 2025. Please include a cover letter and five samples of your work or links to five recent stories. Why Join Us?
