GENERAL PURPOSE

The Mechanical Designer responsibilities include providing accurate product line-specific drawing support, which includes piece part, assembly, and technical drawings, for consumer directed, aesthetically pleasing, innovative, cost-effective, and reproducible designs of furniture, mounts, and accessories for the audio-visual industry. This position also participates in the research and design of products. Additional responsibilities include providing product models for catalogs, sell sheets, or other information tools to assist Sales, Marketing, and Technical Support teams.

The Technical Writer responsibilities include developing, maintaining, and distributing end user documentation for all Company products.

DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Create product design documentation: solid modeling of components and assemblies, technical / manufacturing drawings, BOM's and ECO's
  • Participate in and/or lead cross-functional teams for the associated product lines.
  • Provide technical product support to customers, both internal and external
  • Effectively interface with engineers, designers, technicians, manufacturing engineers, and suppliers to meet project commitments.
  • Assist with the creation, maintenance, and revision of product project plans and effectively communicate project deadlines.
  • Learn and expand personal knowledge of the industry, competitors, and customers, through occasional trade show attendance and direct and indirect customer interaction, to competitively enhance and grow the Company's product capabilities.
  • Develop installation, assembly, and how-to instructions using the Adobe suite of products and various other software programs while following defined conventions for content, appearance, and style.
  • Research and compile technical information from subject matter experts, engineering drawings/ bills of materials, 3D models, and hands-on learning.
  • Prepare and conduct reviews of documents with subject matter experts, internal users and other project team members as required.
  • Work with regulatory compliance engineers to ensure end user documentation meets product safety standards and regulations.
  • Help develop and maintain best practices for creating user friendly/reader friendly documentation.
  • Update existing documentation to reflect changes due to product evolution, user comments, and design changes.
  • Review published materials and recommend revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods of reproduction.
  • Assist with the creation, development, and implementation of processes and procedures.
  • Understand workplace hazards and take steps to proactively prevent and report hazards or injuries in the workplace. Cooperate in safety programs, initiatives, and investigations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Ability to interpret standards, specifications, procedures, drawings, etc., mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work with multi-lingual documentation and translations.
  • Ability to understand complex engineering theories, information, and systems.
  • Strong Organization Skills
  • Ability to multi-task and manage several projects at one time. Ability to demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and to appropriately prioritize workload based upon organization or department needs.
  • Proven ability to make sound decisions within established guidelines.
  • Effective project planning and execution skills; ability to multi-task and manage several projects at once.
  • Need to be a flexible and adaptable facilitator between internal departments across brands and regions, to improve project time, design, and/or communications.
  • Must possess high level of enthusiasm, strong integrity, keen customer service, excellent organizational skills and excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Be detail-oriented and have excellent follow-through skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to function in a deadline driven environment.
  • Must have the ability to make recommendations to effectively resolve problems or issues, by using judgment that is consistent with standards, practices, policies, procedures, regulation, or government law.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, internet and Microsoft Office suite of software including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook (or related e-mail system)
  • Must have a high degree of professionalism.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

  • Associate degree in Design Engineering, Product Design or other related technical degree with a minimum of two (2) years' experience in mechanical design in a manufacturing environment; or combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Work experience with SolidWorks and/or Creo.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FEA experience
  • Electrical or controls experience
  • Experience using Microsoft Project Server/SharePoint
  • Experience with SAP
  • Proficiency in Adobe FrameMaker/Corel Draw, Adobe InDesign/Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat and 3DVIA
  • Familiarity with SAP or other Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software
  • Experience in user centered design

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required (for the majority of the working day) to sit and make coordinated movements of the fingers for data entry on a keyboard.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Combination of general office environment and machine shop environment
  • May require regular ground travel to other company facilities
  • Long-distance or air travel as needed - not to exceed 10% travel
