POSITION SPECIFICS

The Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing is seeking a dynamic and technically skilled Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist to support the delivery of high-fidelity simulation and technology-based education at the Penn State University Park campus.

This role is pivotal in ensuring the seamless operation of audiovisual (AV) systems, simulation technologies, and innovative teaching tools that enhance experiential learning for students.

The Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist will work with faculty and simulation center staff to develop simulation-based educational programs. This includes helping faculty develop interactive learner-centered instructional strategies for use in a state-of-the-art active learning classroom.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Simulation Operations & AV Support

  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot simulation manikins, task trainers, and associated AV systems.

  • Manage and maintain simulation center technologies including cameras, microphones, recording software, and debriefing systems (SimCapture).

  • Coordinate with vendors for the installation, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to simulation and AV equipment.

  • Provide real-time technical support during simulation sessions, ensuring minimal disruption to learning.

  • Maintain inventory and perform routine maintenance and calibration of simulation equipment and software updates.

  • Set up, operate, and support a 200-seat active learning classroom, inclusive of classroom wall and seating changes, as well as manikin and task trainer changes for learner experiences and college events.

  • Calendar and schedule events for simulation lab spaces and the active learning classroom.

  • Assist with inventory management, supply ordering, and budget planning.

  • Maintain ancillary medical equipment such as IV pumps used in simulation.

Innovative Teaching & Educational Technology

  • Collaborate with faculty, instructional designers, and IT personnel to integrate simulation and emerging technologies (e.g., VR/AR, 3D printing, AI tools) as well as support other devices used in both the classroom and the simulation center.

  • Support the development and implementation of interactive learning modules and digital content.

  • Assist in the design and execution of immersive learning environments that promote active learning and clinical reasoning.

Training & Collaboration

  • Train faculty, staff, and learners on the use of simulation equipment and AV systems.

  • Participate in scenario development and simulation planning meetings.

  • Support interprofessional education and collaborative simulation events.

  • Maintain currency in simulation education including staying abreast of emerging simulation technologies.

  • May supervise work-study or part-time simulation technicians.

The Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist will also contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives and simulation center accreditation processes, as well as document simulation activities, equipment usage, and maintenance logs.

As needed, the Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist will be required to infrequently work outside of typical business hours, including early morning and evening hours.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in healthcare, technology, education, or a related field

  • 2+ years of experience in simulation operations, AV support, or clinical education

  • Proficiency with simulation software and AV systems

  • Computer literacy in PC and Mac-based software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Exceptional analytical, interpretive, and problem-solving skills

  • Outstanding communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds with or without accommodation.

Candidates must also have knowledge of the following:

  • Principles and methods of adult education

  • Educational theory and instructional technology

  • Computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to simulator function

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

If filled as Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist - Senior Professional, this position requires: Bachelor's Degree 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) - Society for Simulation in Healthcare If filled as Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist - Advanced Professional, this position requires: Bachelor's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) - Society for Simulation in Healthcare

The Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) certification must be obtained within 12 months of hire.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. Penn State does not sponsor or take over sponsorship of a staff employment Visa. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $56,200.00 - $89,600.00.
