Summary
Responsible for the coordination of electric utility design philosophies which provide protection of the Bulk Electric System by implementing suitable relay protection schemes and coordination of those schemes. Responsible for developing and implementing policies which satisfy the requirements of applicable NERC compliance standards. Also, responsible for representing Garland Power & Light in ERCOT working groups which focus on relay systems and their implementation. Pay Range: (Depending on qualifications and experience)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Supervise crews responsible for installation, testing, and commissioning relay protection systems. Provide conceptual drawings, diagrams and plans for new relay protection systems. Provide conceptual drawings, diagrams and plans for upgrades to existing relay protection systems. Identify and specify relay protection equipment for use in coordinated protection systems. Review design drawings, specifications, and materials to ensure appropriate equipment is purchased and installed. Responsible for policy development and implementation of NERC PRC Standards. Ensure implementation and maintenance of approved relays settings for all protection systems. Develop and maintain monitoring systems for situational awareness of relay protection systems. Represent GP&L in applicable ERCOT working groups.
Minimum Qualifications
4-year college degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Technology 6-8 years related experience Working towards EIT and/or PE license in the State of Texas, or the ability to obtain PE license within 1 year
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications
Education/ Experience
Post graduate work in power systems, engineering management, or related areas 8-10 years' experience in System Protection design and maintenance 1-2 years leadership experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Skills in Microsoft Office and Project Management software Knowledge of substation protection designs and practices Knowledge of electric utility system operations Ability to manipulate computer design, simulation tools and modeling software applications Knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and/or other regulatory agencies standards and practices Understanding of planning and budgeting in regard to projects
