Position Summary

This is the entry level of the GIS Technologist classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve problems, in GIS areas of specialization, with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. They have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures. Associate GIS Technologist supports the operation and maintenance of the company GIS application by maintaining, reporting, and posting work or by gathering data to be input by others.

Responsibilities

  • Applies technical expertise in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems in area of expertise.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective time and work management.

  • Beginning level of knowledge inunderstanding and interpreting complex design drawings, property plats, landbase features, maps, and other related information as necessary to post data in the Company GIS system. Generates and maintains GIS-generated operations maps. Assist with internal and external training. Assist with creation of job aids.

  • Conducts GIS and related studies and inquiries necessary for accurate system updates.

  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance. Performs work of a higher classification when preparing for advancement.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Associate GIS Technologist

  • Associates degree in Geographic Information Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Geology, Geography or other related degree

  • In lieu of associates degree, high school diploma/GED AND four (4) years minimum of related work experience

  • A GIS Certificate will be considered in conjunction with any Associates degree or Bachelors degree.

GIS Technologist

  • Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Geology, Geography or other related degree AND two (2) years minimum of related work experience OR

  • Associates degree in Geographic Information Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Geology, Geography or other related degree AND four (4) years minimum of related work experience

  • In lieu of associates degree AND four (4) years minimum of related work experience, high school diploma/GED AND six (6) years minimum of related work experience

  • A GIS Certificate will be considered in conjunction with any Associates degree or Bachelors degree.

Desired Qualifications

  • Certified GIS professional

  • Prior GIS experience

  • Experience using SmallWorld, ESRI platforms

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

    Working Conditions

    • M - F, flexible schedules available after training and based on business needs (9-80).
    • Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to a Duke Energy facility.
