The Center for Effective School Practices ( CESP) is a Rutgers University technical assistance and training center dedicated to providing customized and practical solutions that maximize organizational effectiveness. Our main objectives are to facilitate the translation of research into best practices and build the capacity of professionals to engage in informed decision-making that is rooted in research and data.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Communications & Publications Specialist for the Center for Effective School Practices ( CESP) within the Graduate School of Education. The Research Communications & Publications Specialist will support a wide range of written communications and publication needs for the department. They will plan, write, edit, and format high-quality, compelling written, visual, and electronic communications to effectively reach a wide variety of audiences. This position works to translate academic and research content into accessible language and formats, understand and synthesize findings from multiple sources, and independently develop strategic communications aligned with the department's goals.
Among the key duties of the position are the following: *

  • Works closely with Center's team and culture to develop a deep knowledge of ongoing projects and priorities to produce informed, nuanced, and contextually appropriate materials.
  • Reads, understands, and interprets reports, articles, proposals, presentations, and other publications, synthesizing information and identifying opportunities for various dissemination products.
  • Translates complex ideas to diverse audiences including parents, educators, academics, and students, strategizing communication approaches considering audience need, complexity, and accessibility.
  • Produces clear and compelling written, visual, and electronic communications, as described below.
  • Written Communications:

    • Writes external-facing publications including reports, practitioner-facing articles, research briefs, promotional and recruiting materials, newsletters, and research summaries.
    • Support the Center's scholarly publications by drafting and editing portions of manuscripts and formatting submissions according to publisher guidelines and standards.



  • Visual Communications:

    • Develops charts, infographics, and other visual materials both as standalone communications and visual aids.
    • Aligns visual communications with Rutgers visual identity standards and guidelines.


  • Electronic Communications:
  • Creates interactive toolkits, digital resources, and multimedia products that engage audiences in varied, accessible formats. Formats and publishes electronic communications using the Center's existing dissemination infrastructure.

FLSA Exempt
Salary Details $78,000

The final salary offer may be determined by several factors, including, but not limited to, the candidate's qualifications, experience, and expertise, and availability of department or grant funds to support the position. Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, or a related field plus a minimum of three years of professional writing and communications experience; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to translate complex concepts into clear, engaging content for varied audiences and purposes.
  • Strong editorial skills, including copy editing, proofreading, and ensuring consistency in style, tone, and formatting across publications.
  • Strong analytical and synthesis skills, including the ability to read, understand, and distill key messages from academic materials and technical documents.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple writing projects simultaneously and meet overlapping deadlines.
  • High level of computer literacy and comfort using digital tools to support communications, outreach, and content dissemination.
  • Proficiency with common office and productivity software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and content management systems.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, taking initiative on projects while strategically seeking out input from team members.
  • Strategic thinking skills to identify communication opportunities and develop appropriate dissemination approaches for different content and audiences.
  • Responsiveness, sensitivity, and professionalism in working with diverse internal and external stakeholders, including academic researchers, practitioners, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Writing, or related field plus five years of professional writing and communications experience.
  • Experience writing for academic or research-focused organizations.
  • Experience with design and data visualization software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Tableau, Canva).
  • Familiarity with digital content creation tools and platforms (e.g., content management systems, social media management tools).
  • Experience with the academic publication processes and scholarly writing conventions.

Equipment Utilized

  • Graphic design software: Adobe Creative Suite (primarily Photoshop and Illustrator), Canva, Tableau.
  • Office productivity software: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Zoom.


Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Occasional lifting of office supplies, files, or materials up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasional travel may be required for events, meetings, or gathering content.
