Position Highlights

The role of the Hemophilia Nurse Coordinator (Nurse III) is comprehensive and expansive. The nurse provides care and education to individuals and families affected by congenital bleeding clotting disorders and is a member of the multidisciplinary team in the Arizona Hemostasis & Thrombosis Center. The nurse is the link between the patients and members of the team and between the community and other health care providers. The AzHTC is a life-span center and provides care to both pediatric and adult patients. This is a unique nursing position as it involves the case management of a very specific group of patients in the inpatient, outpatient and community setting.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conducts nursing assessment, assessment of bleeding history, telephone triage, preparation of treatment products, infusion of treatment products, preparation of clinic forms, and charts each patient encounter in EMR.
  • Participates in patient's annual comprehensive clinic evaluation and writes summary of visit to be sent to patient.
  • Participates in the development of the patient's treatment plan.
  • Provides patient and family education about bleeding disorders, and educates patients/families about self-infusion, calculation of doses, and reconstitution of medication and assessment of bleeding.
  • Teaches patient/family how to self-manage and self-treat their disorder, while re-enforcing strategies to promote patient independence.
  • Provides proactive strategies to enable patient self-advocacy and to "de-medicalize" this chronic disease, and pursues national goal to keep these patients out of the clinic, the emergency room, and the hospital so they can lead a normal life.
  • Acts as an expert resource for multidisciplinary providers, sub-specialty providers, and community agencies to provide consistency in the quality of patient care, and maintains contact with the public, health professionals, and members of related support organizations on a local, regional and national level.
  • Meets with representatives of community agencies, schools, childcare providers, and various other interest groups at other sites, providing education on bleeding disorders and providing proactive strategies to enable patient self sufficiency and self advocacy.
  • Communicates with patients and their families in stressful situations, working as a member of the AzHTC team that includes hematologists, a nurse practitioner, social worker, financial counselor, physical therapist and genetic counselor.
  • Provides telephone consultation to all disciplines involved with bleeding disorder patients.
  • Disseminates new information from local, regional and national organizations to interdisciplinary team and patients as needed.
  • Attends and participates in hemophilia/bleeding disorders educational workshops, training sessions, virtual meetings, and seminars provided by regional and national partners and organizations.
  • Meets with and advocates for patients and families with governmental agencies.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and advanced learning in the nursing field attained through professional level experience
    required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant nursing/public health experience, or equivalent combination of
    education and work experience.
  • RN licensure and graduation from an accredited nursing program required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
