HJF is seeking a Scientist II to develop and supervise research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.

This position will be in support of the Audiology and Speech department at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a battery of tests of auditory function for their individual and collective utility in predicting operational auditory performance.

  • Plans, executes, and oversees laboratory research. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
  • Monitors scientific literature. Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals and prepares patent applications.
  • Coordinates and prepares new grant and funding applications.
  • Processes and interprets experimental data.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Collaborates with other technical and professional staff. Trains and supervises technical staff.
    May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
  • Reviews new patient records and screens patients for eligibility in participation of research protocol, interviews patients for protocols and collects and analyzes appropriate data for recruitment purposes, determines patient commitment and obtains informed consent. Educates patients about the research protocol, their roles in the protocols, and any other vital information.
  • Assists research team to identify problems in the research design or analysis methodology and trends in patient reactions to treatment.
  • Collects, organizes, catalogs, disseminates, and maintains appropriate files of current data. Maintains weekly/monthly status reports on all patients.


Supervisory Responsibilities



  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.


Education and Experience



  • Doctoral Degree required.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years experience required.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance.


Physical Capabilities



  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.


Work Environment



  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.


Compensation



  • The annual salary range for this position is $88,600-$125,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
