Exposure Monitoring

  • The Specialist will be responsible for the completion of sampling surveys as outlined by the area Industrial Hygiene Advisor.
  • Assigned surveys will be structured to include the Site, Similar Exposure Group, Sub-Similar Exposure Group, Agent / Agent Group, required number of samples, and relevant due dates for sample collection, laboratory analysis, data entry, and availability of results in the Cority Industrial Hygiene Data Management System.
  • All samples will be collected according to relevant NIOSH / OSHA / ISO analytical method, or generally accepted Industrial Hygiene Practices and Rio Tinto guidelines.
  • Samples included in an Industrial Hygiene survey may include, but not be limited to the below list:
  • Personal air samples for metals (NIOSH 7300)
  • Respirable Crystalline Silica (NIOSH 7500)
  • Diesel Particulate Matter (NIOSH 5040)
  • Surface Wipe Metals (SW-846 Method 3050 B)
  • Legionella (SM 9260J)
  • The Specialist will be responsible for direct observation of employees performing work tasks during sampling event to ensure validity of sample conditions and work activities. Where direct observation of personal samples is not possible, accurate worklogs must be collected to document conditions present during sampling events.
  • Investigation of instrument data logs may be necessary where required to identify instrument performance information that may require sample to be voided.

Industrial Hygiene Monitoring Equipment Management

  • The Industrial Hygiene team maintains an inventory of sampling equipment and instrumentation to be used in the collection and completion of assigned sampling / monitoring surveys.
  • Accurate, documented evidence of daily instrument calibrations where required.
  • Ensure annual equipment calibrations are completed on schedule, certificates of factory calibrations are received from OEM or certifying laboratory, and maintained in Cority against the equipment record.
  • Identification of instruments or sampling components that are experiencing calibration "drift", indicating that the equipment must be sent for factory repair or calibration.
  • Support in the troubleshooting and exchange of real-time gas detectors provided under a service contract between company and Industrial Scientific.

Laboratory Requisitions and Analysis

  • Air samples collected to analyse against the Metals, Silica, and Surface Metals agent groups will be submitted to the Central Laboratory for analysis. The Central Lab is an AIHA Accredited Laboratory capable of performing analysis of samples collected in accordance with the NIOSH 7300 and 7500 analytical methods.
  • All other collected air samples (ie Diesel Particulate Matter, Asbestos, Legionella, etc) must be submitted to an accredited third party laboratory for analysis as instructed by the responsible Industrial Hygiene Advisor.

Data Management

  • The Industrial Hygiene team utilizes Cority for all sampling information and data management.
  • All sample related information must be accurately entered and managed in Cority in a timely manner.
  • Field Sampling Data Cards, Work Logs, Noise Dosimetry Reports, Certificates of Analysis, and other sample related documents must be scanned and uploaded into Cority in a timely manner.

Communication

  • The primary point of contact for each Specialist will be the responsible site Industrial Hygiene Advisor.

Incident Investigation

  • Company reviews sampling data upon receipt to determine if the PPE worn during the sampling period was protective.
  • The Specialist may assist in the investigation of such exceedances to understand the conditions present during the sampling event and determine if the measured exceedance was in the protective range of the PPE worn during the sampling event.

Documentation and Recordkeeping

  • All sample related information must be documented on provided Field Sampling Data Cards (Blue Cards)
  • NIST traceable factory calibration certificates must be maintained, and demonstrable as required
