Job Description Summary: |
The GW Regulatory Studies Center's mission is to improve regulatory policy through research, education, and outreach. In collaboration with a network of scholars, we provide objective, high-quality yet accessible academic research and programs on regulatory policy, analysis, and process.
The Center Associate will undertake policy research activities under the supervision of the Center's Director and other GW Faculty. The role responsibilities include undertaking short- and long-term research projects related to regulatory issues, examining regulatory practices and specific policies, and writing regulatory policy analyses. The Center Associate will conduct both guided and independent research projects, exercise judgment on policy priorities, and analyze regulatory policies from an economic perspective. The Center Associate will author and co-author policy commentaries, white papers, articles, and public interest comments submitted to federal regulatory agencies.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Independently and in collaboration, analyzes individual regulations, regulatory processes, and regulatory reforms through an economic lens, focusing on the public interest and the impact of regulations on consumers. Performs data collection, data analysis, and literature reviews to identify useful tools for measuring regulatory impacts in various industry sectors. Conducts statistical research to study patterns or trends in regulation and track regulatory impacts using appropriate statistical programming languages.
- Independently manages research tasks and coordinates with other researchers to contribute toward advancing multiple projects, prioritizing and communicating to assure both quality and timely progress.
- Produces reports summarizing research and analyses effectively and objectively.
- Examines federal agency docket materials to assess the potential costs and benefits of regulations, and clearly analyzes the tradeoffs, unintended consequences, disparate impacts, and economic effects of proposed and final regulations.
- Authors and co-authors have written research products, including policy commentaries, journal articles, and public comments. Navigates publication processes in peer-reviewed journals and presents research at academic and other relevant conferences.
- Contributes to Reg Stats databases and webpages, identifying new information to add to these programs as necessary. Tracks regulatory agency activity using federal websites and creates databases, tables, charts, graphs, and infographics to represent regulatory trends and regulatory reform efforts accurately. Clearly communicates these findings to a broad audience of academics, Hill staffers, federal policymakers, and think tanks.
- Attends relevant functions, grows an independent network of policy scholars and researchers, and promotes the Regulatory Studies Center brand and research at off-site events.

Minimum Qualifications: |
Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. |

Preferred Qualifications: |
- A master's degree in public policy, economics, law, political science, or a related field.
- 1+ years of relevant experience in policy analysis and research methods, including data analytics, economics, statistics, & legal analysis.
- Exceptional writing skills and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Self-starter who is able to work independently on assigned tasks.
- Proficiency in statistical and programming languages such as Stata, Python, or R.
- Previous research experience conducting quantitative data analysis.
