Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as Counsel for our Benefits Division!

About the role

In this role, you'll serve as a legal and strategic advisor, providing guidance across product development, claims, compliance, and operations. You'll have the opportunity to work on a broad range of legal issues and build trusted partnerships across the business.

This position requires a solid foundation of law and regulation experience pertaining to group life, disability, and supplemental health insurance products and coverage, experience with state family and medical laws and medical stop loss insurance, also a plus.

What you will do



  • Legal Advisory & Strategy

    • Advise business leaders on complex legal issues and strategic matters related to core product and service offerings.
    • Offer proactive legal counsel to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and mitigate legal, reputational, and enterprise risk.


  • Contract Review & Negotiation

    • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contracts including:
    • Group insurance and medical stop loss policies and contracts
    • Group insurance master service agreements
    • Administrative services agreements
    • Data protection and privacy agreements
    • NDAs, vendor contracts, and benefits technology agreements
    • Request for Proposals and procurement contracts
    • Collaborate with internal partners such as compliance, procurement, and IT security to align terms with business priorities.


  • Product & Claims Support

    • Provide legal insight for product development initiatives, claims adjudication processes, claims triage, pre-litigation, and daily operational matters.
    • Offer practical legal advice to claims professionals, in addition to supporting corporate litigation.
    • Participate in committees and special projects to help shape business policy and process improvements.


  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Act as a key legal partner in cross-functional working groups, helping align business initiatives with regulatory and legal frameworks.


  • Legal Research & Knowledge Management

    • Monitor and analyze emerging laws and regulations impacting group insurance and employee benefits, including ERISA, HIPAA, COBRA, ACA, FMLA, and state-specific leave laws.
    • Stay informed on privacy, cybersecurity, and information security developments and their impact on group insurance offerings

Compensation

Salary Range: 125,000 - $208,400 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who You Are



  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school required and an active member of a state bar in good standing.
  • 3+ years of legal experience in a law firm and/or corporate legal department, ideally within the insurance or financial services sector.
  • Experience in life and disability insurance, group benefits, or employee benefits required.
  • Strong experience drafting and negotiating complex contracts.
  • Experience advising on ERISA, HIPAA, privacy laws, and employment-related matters in the insurance or benefits space preferred.
  • Ability to counsel both legal and business ramifications of initiatives directly with internal partners and external counsel.
  • Proven ability to lead projects and improve internal processes in legal or compliance environments.
