Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History is part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a Center within the University's Academic Affairs Division, we have a central role in supporting the University's academic mission. We have a commitment to broaden the range of intellectual discourse about African-Americans and to encourage better understanding of people of the African diaspora and their perspectives on important social and cultural issues |
Position Summary |
In collaboration with Stone Center staff, the Visual Art Specialist is responsible for both creative and administrative duties related to the operation of the Brown Gallery. Key responsibilities include coordinating the installation and maintenance of the fall art exhibition, designing and constructing display systems, and ensuring the upkeep of the gallery space and equipment. The Specialist also serves as a resource on the social and cultural context of the artwork and trains student employees and volunteers in the proper handling and display of art. This role requires expertise in art handling, exhibition installation, and gallery maintenance, along with strong communication and organizational skills. Additional responsibilities may include curating exhibitions, managing equipment and supply procurement and expenses, and fostering relationships with the curator, vendors, students and staff. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of visual/graphic arts experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Art Handling and Installation: Experience with hanging and installing artwork, building display systems, and handling various art materials.
* Knowledge of Art History and Contemporary Art: Understanding of different art forms, styles, and the art market.
* Organizational and Project Management Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
* Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication skills for interacting with artists, clients, and the public.
* Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Skills: Ability to address challenges and make informed decisions related to gallery operations and exhibitions |

* Previous gallery installation experience with ability to design and execute installation plan for a gallery exhibition.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
* Completing gallery mounts may involve moving and maneuvering heavy artwork, potentially up to 50 lbs. or more. This position requires that you be able to lift/move/maneuver up to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.
* Ability to safely and accurately handle and operate a variety of hand tools and equipment within a gallery setting.
* Ability to precisely handle delicate and fragile pieces |
