National Grid is hiring a Engineering Manager, Electrical Planning and Design for Massachusetts. Hybrid. Ability to travel throughout our service territory for critical meetings where face to face interaction is of high value.

Job Purpose

To manage a team responsible to ensure effective National Grid operations related to Substation Control and Integration for New England. Provide leadership and oversight of tasks with building or modifying electrical utility substations focusing on engineering and design of control, SCADA, metering, DC system, protection circuits & data networks within substations.

Key Accountabilities
  • Provide leadership and oversight to ensure that engineers to create Scope Documents detailing the philosophy, design, equipment details, RTU and annunciator point lists and deviations from standards for control and integration equipment required for a substation project.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to ensure that engineers to review, approve, and develop electrical schematics for RTU control, breaker control, protective relays, annunciators, networks, equipment power, load transfer/shedding and capacitor control schemes.
  • Lead the team to provide engineering support during electrical switchboard design, construction and commissioning.
  • Lead the team to aid in analyzing the operation of substation control systems for proper operation following system disturbances. Determine causes of improper operation and carry out corrective action.
  • Lead the team to develop standard designs and guidelines for substation control systems.
  • Be a change agent for newly developed engineering, asset management and capital delivery initiatives.
  • Apply process improvement techniques and practices to promote continuous improvement and foster excellence in project engineering.
  • Support Operations during storm emergencies as required. Train self and staff to be prepared to execute storm roles assigned.
  • Make authoritative technical engineering recommendations to support team members and provide innovative solutions which have a positive impact on business performance in the short and longer term.
  • Ensure that the team deliverables are timely, feasible, fit for purpose and of superior quality
  • Promote the philosophy of safe working to team employees.
  • Develop and implement plans to develop engineering in a diverse professional team to ensure effective use of resources and effective solutions for internal and external customers.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to ensure that engineers execute instructions and requests, plan and organize resources and make appropriate arrangements to ensure that work is carried out efficiently and in-line with relevant policies and processes.
  • Develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders to obtain and share information that will benefit National Grid.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for engineers to undertake specific tasks of varying complexity to support colleagues in the design of technical solutions.
  • Support Company initiatives for innovation and modernization of our energy delivery infrastructure (e.g., MA Grid Modernization.)

Qualifications
  • Knowledge and Experience Required:
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an accredited engineering school with knowledge of high voltage electrical power systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years in an engineering field closely related to electric power system engineering.
  • Substation C&I Engineering work experience is preferred (master's degree considered equivalent to 1 year work experience)
  • Good working knowledge of relevant industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes.
  • Basic knowledge of National grid electrical schematics and vendor prints.
  • Basic knowledge of National Grid's business operations, Company policies and practices.
  • Basic understanding of National grid electrical schematics and vendor prints.
  • Basic knowledge of National Grid's substation practices, testing, construction and maintenance techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of National Grid's substation automation, digital communications techniques and protocols.
  • Basic understanding of the National Grid SCADA system (including EMS and Control Centers)
  • Proficient MS Office computer skills (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
  • Demonstrates the ability to build an informed, independent opinion of project scoping needs, problems and/or opportunities and manage the development appropriate solutions.
  • Proven interpersonal and written communication and leadership skills.
  • Extensive relevant experience can substitute with a very qualified candidate
  • Valid driver's license.
Capability Requirements:
  • Deep understanding of electric power systems, which includes knowledge of power system equipment application and performance, understands the principals involved in electric power system design and construction, operating and maintenance principals and methods of electric power facilities.
  • Is recognized as a credible and knowledgeable electric power system expert within electrical power systems discipline with respect to facility layout, expansion, construction operation, maintenance, standards, system development and support.
  • Effective communication skills - verbal/written and presentation - capable of tailoring communications to meet stakeholder/customer needs.
  • Proven capabilities managing effective complex projects and teams.
  • Understanding Others: Understands what someone is saying or feeling, even if person is not very clear, and can accurately predict how someone will respond.
  • Impact and Influence: Adapts approach and considers what is important to the audience (e.g. a colleague or an engineering customer) by tailoring message accordingly.

  • Customer Orientation: Takes personal responsibility for correcting problems promptly and cooperatively and communicates internal and external engineering customer expectations so as to monitor delivery of engineering tasks and satisfaction.
  • Drive for Results: Proactively makes changes to improve performance, efficiency and effectiveness of processes (e.g., challenge existing engineering procedures and highlight areas for improvement).
  • Ability to take a lead role in organizing, driving, and creating solutions to Substation Control and Integration related issues across various Company Organizations.
  • Ability to work independently with external National Grid customers to resolve substation C&I related issues, provide engineering review to ensure compliance on new installations, and disseminate required information to proper internal organizations for new installations.

Salary - $174,000 - $205,000
