Primary Responsibilities

HDR's Bridge Engineer will: serve as a project manager, technical leader, or a task leader for bridge engineering projects of varying sizes and complexity; perform structural design and detailing of new bridge structural components (Superstructure, substructure, and foundation components) for new, widening, and replacement structure projects as well as structural design and detail of earth retaining structures (Retaining Walls, Culverts, Soldier Piles, Mechanically Stabilized Earth, Ground Anchors); select standard bridge engineering/design procedures, develop structural details using specialized structural design and analysis software, perform structural load calculations, and assist with geometric layout; perform structural and feasibility analysis required for advanced planning and type selection studies and prepare related reports and technical memorandums; supervise, assign and review work performed by junior engineers and technical staff; perform analysis, design, and detail of various structural materials such as Concrete, Structural Steel, Masonry, Wood/Timber, and others; assist with the development of scope of work and level of effort for projects and/or assignment within discipline; perform seismic assessment and retrofit of existing bridges; produce and revise bridge material quantities, cost estimates, and specifications; produce and revise construction documentation; coordinate with subconsultants to keep projects on schedule and within budget and manage day-to-day communication (verbal and written) with the client; and implement procedures and oversee use of project quality plans.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and 3 years of experience in bridge engineering or a Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and 5 years of experience in bridge engineering.
  • Required experience must include experience in: analysis of new and existing bridge structures; design of retaining walls and other ancillary transportation structures; design of non-structural components related to bridge structures; evaluation and design of bridge structures for dynamic forces including seismic, wind, and collision loads; modeling and analysis of both shallow and deep foundation systems; and application of nation-wide and state-specific design codes, provisions, and performance requirements, such as AASHTO, ACI, AISC, TMS, and NDS.
  • Must be proficient in: SAP2000, CSIBridge, LARSA, FB-Multipier, VBridge, VBent, CTBridge, CTAbut, LPILE, XTRACT, MatLab, MathCAD, AutoCAD, Microstation, LEAP Bridge Enterprise, and Bluebeam.
  • Must hold Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or have passed Professional Engineer examination (from any US jurisdiction).
  • NOTE: All HDR positions in the US may be subject to background checks and/or pre-employment drug testing.


Location of Employment: 3220 El Camino Real, Suite 200, Irvine, CA 92602.

The expected compensation range for this position is $131,040 to $166,394.
