Position Summary
The Clinical Nurse Consultant II is accountable for facilitating the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Clinical Nurse Consultant II provides patient care and consultation, coordinates perioperative and Neuro Interventional Radiology care, and acts as a role model in clinical practice. The Clinical Nurse Consultant II strives to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Clinical Nurse Consultant II participates in monitoring, developing, and evaluating nursing practice while fulfilling unit and organizational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical
Accountable for Perioperative and Neuro Interventional Radiology care coordination, ambulatory clinic surgical and Neuro IR patient care and follow ups, effective scheduling and perioperative and Neuro Interventional Radiology patient preparation to include medical and financial readiness for surgical cases, pre and postoperative care planning.
Engages in quality improvement projects for the unit and actively participates in quality improvement projects within the Division and Hospital. Monitors quality improvement outcomes and compliance.
Develops, coordinates and/or mentor staff in surgical coordination, patient care plan development and ongoing clinical assessment. Uses clinical expertise to collaborate with nursing staff and health care team to improve patient outcomes.
Consults with and implements orders from credentialed providers by performing interventions as prescribed by and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
Assesses, engages and obtains clinical information from multidisciplinary team, patients and/or family, and external care adjuncts, to develop an appropriate patient perioperative and educational plan. Work in close liaison with the inter-professional perioperative team to include Ambulatory Clinic, Financial, Anesthesia, Operating Room, Neuro IR, Sterile Processing, and Purchasing Teams. Obtain records from outside facilities as needed to coordinate surgical care and facilitate medical and financial readiness.
Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patient changes and dynamic surgery scheduling needs to promote safety, quality care delivery, efficiency, and block optimization.
Engages nursing and support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback as needed. Ensure there is an effective closed loop of communication.
Demonstrates a commitment to UI Health's values through teamwork and effective communication to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction and a clean, safe and therapeutic environment.
Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide quality patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.
Yearly completion of orientation program and unit-specific competencies.

Education/Research Collaborate with other nurses and physicians to identify, promote, and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
Assess and analyze educational needs of patients, colleagues, staff, and students.
Plan, present, and evaluate learning/educational experiences for staff and students.
Initiate, conduct, and analyze evidence-based practice research to improve patient care outcomes. Serves as a preceptor, mentor, and a resource to other nursing staff and students.
Access Medical Center intranet for relevant communication and to review and interpret changes in policy, procedure and other information pertinent to practice.
Conducts and support multidisciplinary research efforts in the department and across UI Health.
Take responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Eligibility for registration with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
- Two years of nursing experience in the particular branch of service to which assigned, one year of which involved work comparable to a Clinical Nursing Consultant I.
Required:
- Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse from the State of Illinois.
- Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit-specific certifications.
- Effective communication skills (oral and written) which facilitates therapeutic relationships between patients, families, and health care providers. Ability to build relationships and establish rapports with patients and colleagues.
- Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.
- Excellent demeanor and experience that promotes working with multidisciplinary teams.
- Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic medical record systems with on-the-job training.
- Ability to multitask and timely follow up on dynamic changes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master of Science in Nursing.
- ANCC Nursing certification.
- Experience with surgery block schedules and perioperative or procedural care coordination.
