Materials and Plant Engineering

This position will primarily support the Engineering, Materials & Production departments of Sumter Metal Products. Our goal is to produce high-quality metal fabricated assemblies in an efficient and cost-effective manner, while ensuring on-time delivery to our customers.

• Provide Support Functions for local Engineer, Corporate and Materials.
• Work with coordinators in Focus Area Meetings and Cock Walks to identify DFx opportunities.
• Must Manage Engineering Workflow, responsible for managing Engineering Custom order report and Material Creation for each engineering request.
• Must be in controls for DFm/DFx and E-100 inputs with all documentation.
• Coordination process improvements and opportunities for E-100 - capital savings.
• Creating standards and updates to the Manufacturing instructions.
• Managing Capital Projects - from internal no budget to Large industrial scale Capital Projects
• Manage Materials / Procurement teams responsible for planning, scheduling and control of inventory of all incoming materials and purchased parts
• Manage departmental resources in Purchasing to procure materials at the lowest cost consistent with the quality and service required and within the corporate guidelines.
• Manage departmental resources in Warehouse Operations to maintain continuity of supply to support customer shipments, manufacturing schedules, and corporate traffic guidelines.
• Ensure alignment between the MRP signals for purchased material / components and the Planning Dept's production plan.
• Work with Corporate Purchasing to create an effective Supply Chain Mgt strategy based on J.I.T. deliveries
• Work to achieve Company Targets for Inventory Turns throughout the operations.
• Provide guidance in analysis of production and inventory reporting and data.
• Manage departmental support of ISO, OSHA, and DOT by assuring compliance with program requirements and ongoing maintenance.
• Provide leadership to all associates and create a working environment for employee development and opportunity using performance reviews and consistent communication.
• Manage the Inventory Control Team overseeing daily / weekly cycle counts and overall coordination of Physical Inventory counts.
• Lead the process for PFEP (Plan for Every Part) which will align with the future state targets as outlined in the Value Stream Analysis.
• Oversight of the Material Handling function creating efficient delivery routes and inventory guidelines according to the PFEP plan.
• Establish departmental goals and objectives to achieve plant and corporate performance objectives and budgets.
• Provide communication and training in support of our Health and Safety initiatives.
• Manage or assist in engineering and fabrication Motive Power trays, layouts, components, and accessories.
• Sheet Metal, Metal working or Fabrication Experience needed.
• Drafting and CAM support using AutoCAD, SolidWorks and Windchill. Willing to Train in CAM Software.
• Manage and create new/revised materials for entry into SAP / SAP Experience, Creating materials, BOM's and routings.
• Assist in managing projects for production development, design criteria, product and process improvement.
• Assist in gathering, organizing, and analyzing data relating to Engineering-sponsored projects...including prototype builds, new products, and new process introduction.

EDUCATION and/ or EXPERIENCE:2-year - 4-year degree or equivalent certification or 5-7 years' experience in design engineering or design-related engineering, in addition to work history with Materials and Lean. A proven work history of AutoCAD/ Drafting / Solid Works knowledge and exposure, and above average computer skills in Microsoft Office Software.

Knowledge of purchasing legal and ethical boundaries, raw material source, plant planning, inbound / outbound logistics, customer service, warehousing, transportation, and material requirements planning.

Knowledge of the Steel Market and Industries, the ability to negotiate with vendors and procure steel for the Metals Value stream.

Knowledge of Direct and Indirect Materials - Procurement process of all items needed for the manufacturing process.Must be capable of reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and assembly details for fabrication.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.The candidate will be required to write routine reports and correspondence and must have effective oral and written communication skills.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Strong ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, check drawing accuracy, use formulas involving area, circumference, and volume.The candidate must have the ability to understand and apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABLITY:Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.The candidate should be able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Supply Chain certification, Engineering Certs and or design related. In addition to Lean Background, with focus on MMF, CCF, RCA and DXF.

Manual dexterity as needed type and manipulate parts/components.
The employee must occasionally move or lift up to100-pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts as seen in a manufacturing work environment of the plant floor and activities. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

At a minimum steel toe shoes, eye and hearing protection are required.
