National Radio Astronomy Observatory Title: Education Specialist Location: NRAO Array Operations Center, PO Box 0, SOCORRO, New Mexico, United States of America Requisition Number: 60 Job Family: Education & Public Outreach Pay Type: Salary Position Description: Position Summary The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is an exciting and prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. In addition to its scientific work, the Observatory is committed to outreach and education. The Observatory offers a wide range of programs and resources for students, teachers, and the general public, including tours, lectures, and online resources. At NRAO, we are recruiting for a full time Education Specialist on the STEAM Education team within the Education and Public Outreach (EPO) division at our offices in Socorro, New Mexico. The Education Specialist will assist in designing, creating, implementing, and executing formal and informal education programs for K-12 students and teachers, and other K-12 focused STEM groups. Subject matter will include a broad range of subjects related to radio astronomy, to be presented online and/or in person. The Education Specialist will also work with and support the greater EPO team efforts. The STEAM Education team is split between NRAO's Charlottesville, Virginia and Socorro, New Mexico locations. The STEAM Education Manager and this Education Specialist are based in New Mexico, along with three part-time tour guides. An initial remote work arrangement may be possible, but the successful candidate must be local to Socorro, New Mexico by the start of the 2024-2025 school year. The Senior Public Education Officer Leads the formal and informal education and visitor center programs conducted throughout the Observatory. Manages the establishment of education goals and strategies and implements tactics to achieve with the Observatory EPO mission and vision and strategic education goals. Collaborates with EPO staff and others to fund new initiatives and assess the effectiveness of the Observatory wide formal and informal education program. The STEAM Education Manager The STEAM Education Manager is responsible for defining and improving NRAO's teaching interfaces to learners and educators and growing a healthy STEAM EPO grants portfolio for the Observatory. (S)he manages and launches formal and informal STEAM and STEAM educational programs for the Observatory and supervises the NRAO Senior STEAM Education Specialist and STEAM Education Specialist in Socorro, NM. Additionally, the STEAM Education Manager will build relationships throughout the Observatory to support and encourage staff to actively participate in STEAM educational activities across all sites. Work Environment Work is typically performed in a educational, research, or development environment. May occasionally work at high altitudes. Occasional domestic travel is required.
